TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored the use of mass/stiffness eccentricity in simple buildings to damp the response to excitation due to base motion, and achieved a broad range of efficiencies depending upon the system eccentricity and the available viscous damping.
Abstract: This paper explores the use of mass/stiffness eccentricity in simple buildings to damp the response to excitation due to base motion. Examples include one- and two-story buildings when discussing low-rise structures and shear beams when discussing taller structures. Base motions include a simple step function and earthquake input. A broad range of efficiencies is achieved depending upon the system eccentricity and the available viscous damping. Asymptotic efficiencies of 50% are indicated in some cases. Optimal parameters are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a simplified procedure for earthquake analysis of concrete gravity dams developed earlier for nonoverflow monoliths is extended to gated spillway monolith, and the use of the simplified analysis procedure and a computer program that facilitates implementation of the procedure is illustrated by examples.
Abstract: : The simplified procedure for earthquake analysis of concrete gravity dams developed earlier for nonoverflow monoliths is extended in this report to gated spillway monoliths. Standard data are presented for the vibration properties of such monoliths and for all parameters that are required in the analysis procedure. The use of the simplified analysis procedure and of a computer program that facilitates implementation of the procedure is illustrated by examples. Keywords: Concrete, Dams (gravity), Design, Dynamics, Earthquakes, Earthquake resistant structures, Foundation interaction, Hydrodynamic pressure, Spillway.

TL;DR: The evolution of the design and construction practice of reinforced concrete buildings in Mexico is presented in this article in terms of materials, structural systems, member design and reinforcement detailing, along with the impact they have had on the characteristics of new building construction.
Abstract: The evolution of the design and construction practice of reinforced concrete buildings in Mexico is presented in terms of materials, structural systems, member design and reinforcement detailing. The main changes in the regulations and in the practice after 1985 are briefly described, along with the impact they have had on the characteristics of new building construction.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a critical analysis of earthquake provisions in building codes and propose a method to ensure that the structural engineer can integrate earthquake provisions into the design later, after the architectural design is completed.
Abstract: Modern science has enabled experts in building process such as engineers and architects to prepare and organize earthquake provisions through building codes. However, having a modern earthquake code does not guarantee earthquake resistant buildings. The clarity of the codes, especially for architects, and code enforcement are other important factors that should be satisfied. Many scholars and practicing architects may think that ensuring the implementation of earthquake-resistant designs is primarily the responsibility of the structural engineer, but in reality it is not. Earthquake-resistant design is closely related to the architectural configuration of a building. In many instances, certain earthquake resistant design requirements are neglected both in architectural education and in practice with the thought that the structural engineer can integrate earthquake provisions in the design later, after the architectural design is completed. This paper presents a critical analysis of earthquake provisions r...
