TL;DR: A Fourier spectra analysis of the recorded February 9, 1971, San Fernando earthquake response of 12 southern California high-rise buildings was conducted and damping in building normal modes of vibration was estimated as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A Fourier spectra analysis of the recorded February 9, 1971, San Fernando earthquake response of 12 southern California high-rise buildings was conducted and damping in building normal modes of vibration was estimated. Obtained damping values were correlated with building basement 0% damped pseudovelocity response spectrum and empirical equations were derived for damping estimation. A procedure utilizing these equations was developed for the selection of damping values for use in building design.

TL;DR: In this paper, a partially prestressed concrete alternative and two masonry retrofit alternatives are analyzed for improving the local and global response performance of reinforced concrete frame structures designed only for gravity loads and constructed in low-to-moderate seismic zones.
Abstract: A partially prestressed concrete alternative and two masonry retrofit alternatives are analyzed for improving the local and global response performance of reinforced concrete frame structures designed only for gravity loads and constructed in low-to-moderate seismic zones. The objective of these retrofits is to reconfigure the structural failure mode by averting a catastrophic soft-story collapse and enforcing a more ductile beam sidesway mechanism. A prestressed concrete jacketing alternative to limited columns was selected to retrofit the one-third scale model reinforced concrete frame building that had been previously tested by the authors. The seismic response of the retrofit model structure was investigated experimentally using the "shaking table" at State University of New York at Buffalo. A comparison is made of the experimental frame response before and after retrofitting. It is concluded that the seismic performance of vulnerable (soft-story prone) gravity load design frames may be effectively enhanced by strengthening limited columns and thus, changing the failure mode to a beam sidesway mechanism with acceptable story deformation levels.

TL;DR: In this paper, shape memory alloy (SMA) wire dampers are used to control the seismic response of a three-story nonlinear steel frame building and the results of this simulation-based benchmark control study show that SMA wire dampeners, as a passive structure control measure, can effectively reduce the seismic responses of the three-dimensional benchmark building structure and has the potential to withstand several design earthquakes without the need for repair.
Abstract: This paper presents a simulation-based benchmark control study in which shape memory alloy (SMA) wire dampers are utilized to control the seismic response of a three-story nonlinear steel frame building. The SMA wire damper uses superelastic Nitinol wires for energy dissipation because of its high fatigue life and large recoverable strain. An analytical model which considers the training effect of SMA wires is used to describe the stress-strain relationship of superelastic SMA wires. The performance of SMA wire dampers is investigated in the framework of the third-generation benchmark problem on structural control. A comparative study of the seismic response control performance of SMA wire dampers with either unprestrained or prestrained SMA wires was also conducted. The results of this simulation-based benchmark control study show that SMA wire dampers, as a passive structure control measure, can effectively reduce the seismic responses of the three-story nonlinear benchmark building structure and has the potential to withstand several design earthquakes without the need for repair.
