TL;DR: In this paper, the authors make no attempt to separate the shaman from other ''healers,\" part-time religious practitioners, etc., and seem to lump all of them under the catchall phrase of ''the little tradition''.
Abstract: Most anthropologists who have described or analyzed shamanism in South Asia approach the subject from a functionalist point of view. For example, Berreman, in writing about shamanism in northern India, contrasts the \"roles of the shaman\" with \"the roles of Brahman priests\" and notes that shamans are especially important as \"religious innovators and policy makers.\"l He claims that priests are administrators of the \"learned, literate, or great tradition,\" 2 while shamans have \"direct contact with the supernatural world through a personal familiar spirit which can possess his body (literally 'come to his head') and speak through his mouth to communicate with people who call upon him for information.\"3 Although he seems to define the shaman in terms of his ability to become \"possessed,\" he makes no attempt to separate the shaman from other \"healers,\" part-time religious practitioners, etc. On the contrary, he seems to lump all of them under the catchall phrase of \"the little tradition.\"4 Mandelbaum follows Berreman in mak-

TL;DR: An outline of the distribution of shigellae in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Continental China, the Philippines, and other countries to the south is presented in the form of a survey from data compiled in the literature in terms of the spectrum of Shigella group.
Abstract: An outline of the distribution of shigellae in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Continental China, the Philippines, and other countries to the south is presented in the form of a survey from data compiled in the literature in terms of the spectrum of Shigella group. Japan is the only country to date with S. sonnei in an absolute majority, though it is gradually increasing also in the other areas. S. dysenteriae and S. boydit are seldom detected in urban communities of Japan but the former is found at a rate of 5 to 10 per cent in the other countries except Taiwan and Hong Kong. The latter appears in the same proportion, particularly in Vietnam. In Japan, the change in the ratio of S. flexneri and S. sonnei has been demonstrable in minute, year by year steps since 1951. In Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China an identical change is taking place approximately within a given period of time.

TL;DR: The view of the history of maritime South East Asia which fixed a rigid dividing line in 1511 or 1600, and regarded the assertion of European dominance in the area as marking the frontier between traditional and modern history, has long ago been discredited and discarded.
Abstract: That view of the history of maritime South East Asia which fixed a rigid dividing line in 1511 or 1600, and regarded the assertion of European dominance in the area as marking the frontier between traditional and modern history, has long ago been discredited and discarded. It led to the treatment of the earlier history of Malaya and Indonesia as a mere prelude to the coming of the Europeans, or at least as an era without relevance to later events, to which special criteria must be applied. The later history was treated predominantly as the story of European activities and rivalries, and purely western criteria were applied even to indigenous themes. All this is now regarded as unscientific, and labelled ‘Europe-centric’. Few, if any, contemporary historians would challenge this judgment so far as the internal history of Malaya and Indonesia and their component parts are concerned, and, though there is still ample room for discussion as to its application in practice, this paper does not seek to re-open the debate. It is concerned not so much with the development of maritime South East Asian society, or with the history of individual states within what are now Malaysia and Indonesia, as with the relations of these states with each other.

TL;DR: Murthy et al. as mentioned in this paper pointed out that despite the tremendous economic achievement of the last ten years and a set of impressive figures relating to economic activity leave no doubt about Japan's status as one of the advanced cou ntries of the world and virtually the industrial giant of Asia, there is still an element of uncertainty about the nature and extent of the role which she can play in Asian affairs.

TL;DR: For example, this paper pointed out that the real Japan is fundamentally unlike all these romantic pictures, and in so far as it resembles another country, that country is Russia under the tyranny of the Tsars.
Abstract: To an Englishman of my generation, whose schooling took place during the 1920–30s, the practice of comparing Japan with Britain has long been a commonplace. School geography lessons on Japan invariably began with a reference to the temperate offshore island kingdom of eastern Asia as the ‘Britain of the East’, and this theme was often elaborated to include the characterization of Osaka and Kobe respectively as the Manchester and Liverpool of Japan. But following the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931 the climate of opinion began to change, and so did the analogy. In 1936, Freda Utley, in a book which attracted widespread interest, observed:Although the real Japan comes a little closer to being the Prussia of Asia than the Britain of Asia, it is fundamentally unlike all these romantic pictures, and in so far as it resembles another country, that country is Russia under the tyranny of the Tsars.
