A Survey of Financial Integration in East Asia; How Far? How Much Further to Go?

Abstract: This paper offers a selective survey of the recent empirical literature on financial integration, the focus being on alternative definitions of financial integration and measurement issues and results. The literatures to be reviewed have been selected primarily because their analyses have included some East Asian economies. In particular, this study concentrates on the ASEAN?5 plus 3 or APT economic group (i.e. Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Korea, China and Japan) as well as Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei. These are the economies that have consciously attempted to intensify intraregional monetary and financial cooperation in the last few years, particularly since the East Asian crisis of 1997-98.

War Memory and Social Politics in Japan, 1945-2005

Abstract: Japan has long wrestled with the memories and legacies of World War II. In the aftermath of defeat, war memory developed as an integral part of particular and divergent approaches to postwar democracy. In the last six decades, the demands placed upon postwar democracy have shifted considerably - from social protest through high economic growth to Japan's relations in Asia - and the meanings of the war shifted with them. This book unravels the political dynamics that governed the place of war memory in public life. Far from reconciling with the victims of Japanese imperialism, successive conservative administrations have left the memory of the war to representatives of special interests and citizen movements, all of whom used war memory to further their own interests.Franziska Seraphim traces the activism of five prominent civic organizations to examine the ways in which diverse organized memories have secured legitimate niches within the public sphere. The history of these domestic conflicts - over the commemoration of the war dead, the manipulation of national symbols, the teaching of history, or the articulation of relations with China and Korea - is crucial to the current discourse about apology and reconciliation in East Asia, and provides essential context for the global debate on war memory.

The spread of agriculture in eastern Asia: Archaeological bases for hypothetical farmer/language dispersals

Abstract: Millets and rice were important for the demographic history of China. This review draws on current archaeobotanical evidence for rice and millets across China, Korea, eastern Russia, Taiwan, Mainland southeast Asia, and Japan, taking a critical approach to dating evidence, evidence for cultivation, and morphological domestication. There is no evidence to suggest that millets and rice were domesticated simultaneously within a single region. Instead, 5 regions of north China are candidates for independent early cultivation of millets that led to domestication, and 3 regions of the Yangtze basin are candidates for separate rice domestication trajectories. The integration of rice and millet into a single agricultural system took place ca. 4000 BC , and after this the spread of agricultural systems and population growth are in evidence. The most striking evidence for agricultural dispersal and population growth took place between 3000 and 2500 BC , which has implications for major language dispersals.
