TL;DR: In this article, the impact of implementing the Uruguay Round obligations to open textile and clothing markets in OECD countries would reduce East Asia's industrialization and thereby slow its net imports of food.
Abstract: Rapid industrialization in East Asia, particularly China, is raising questions about who will feed the region in the next century and how will Asia be able to pay for its food imports. The paper addresses this question by first reviewing existing food sector projections and then taking an economy-wide perspective using projections to 2005, based on the global CGE model known as GTAP. After showing the impact of implementing the Uruguay Round, the paper explores several alternative scenarios. A slowdown in farm productivity growth is shown to be very costly to the world economy, as is slower economic growth in China. Failure to honour Uruguay Round obligations to open textile and clothing markets in OECD countries would reduce East Asia’s industrialization and thereby slow its net imports of food. On the other hand, the trade reform that is likely to accompany China’s (and hence Taiwan’s) membership of the World Trade Organization adds 30% to the estimated global gains from the Uruguay Round. Their WTO accession are projected to boost exports of manufactures and strengthen food import demand by not only China but also its densely populated neighbours with whom it trades intensively.

TL;DR: The export booms in South Korea and Taiwan starting in the early 1960s are anomalous when compared with later export boom in non-East Asian countries such as Chile and Turkey as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The export booms in South Korea and Taiwan starting in the early 1960s are anomalous when compared with later export booms in non-East Asian countries such as Chile and Turkey. First, these booms have taken place in the context of comparatively small changes in relative prices in favor of exportables. Second, they have been associated from the start with booms in investment. This paper offers evidence and a formal model to suggest that exports in East Asia may have been driven by an increase in the profitability of investment, with outward orientation a consequence of the investment boom rather than its instigator.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the challenges faced by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) automobile industry a decade after the East Asian financial crisis of 1997-1998, and at a time of a new global financial crisis emanating in the US and a downturn of the global economy.
Abstract: With the exception of countries with huge potential markets like China and India the dominant academic view on establishing and sustaining viable national automobile projects in Asian developing countries is pessimistic, but still pursued by some developing country governments in Asia. Where do these contradicting views leave the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) automobile industry a decade after the East Asian financial crisis of 1997–1998, and at a time of a new global financial crisis emanating in the US and a downturn of the global economy? And how has automobile manufacturing in Thailand and Malaysia – two countries with sizable automobile markets that pursued different automobile policies and strategies since the early 1980s – adjusted and developed in a context of economic globalisation and emerging regionalisation of the ASEAN auto market in the twenty-first century? What are the lessons to be learned by Thailand's automobile policy that is oriented towards foreign direct investment ...

TL;DR: The article reviews whether the medical education reforms brought improvement to the medical curricula and effectively fulfilled the cultural and social needs of Asian countries and explores the establishment of medical education departments in many Asian medical schools.
Abstract: Medical education reform is taking place all over the world including Asia, which has 60% of the world's population. Confronted with diverse social and cultural needs as well as resource constraints, various regions in Asia have carried out medical education reform at different levels and directions. In this article, the authors describe the application of Western-inspired reforms and localization and adaptation of Western models to fit the cultural and community needs in the five different subregions of Asia: (1) Eastern Asia, (2) Southern Asia, (3) Southeastern Asia, (4) Central Asia, and (5) Western Asia. The article reviews whether the medical education reforms brought improvement to the medical curricula and effectively fulfilled the cultural and social needs of Asian countries. The authors also explore the establishment of medical education departments in many Asian medical schools and the incorporation of research findings into medical practice. Departments of medical education will facilitate localization and promote further development of medical education reform in Asia despite the challenges ahead.
