TL;DR: In this paper, the first and second noise detecting circuits detect whether image data output from a signal processing circuit includes noise, and then the second noise reducing circuit adds the edge data and second image data, which has been output by the first noise detecting circuit, and outputs the resultant data.
Abstract: First and second noise detecting circuits detect whether image data output from a signal processing circuit includes noise If the image data includes noise, first and second noise reducing circuits reduce the noise An edge extracting circuit extracts edge data from the first image data in which noise has been reduced An adding circuit adds the edge data and second image data, which has been output by the second noise reducing circuit, and outputs the resultant data Even though edge enhancement is applied, noise is not enhanced but noise is reduced

TL;DR: The effect of the saturation of the nonlinearity on correlation performance is investigated and is shown to be able to improve correlator recognition and discrimination, demonstrating excellent optical quality, nonlinear edge enhancement, and real-time operation.
Abstract: The results of joint transform correlation with photoanisotropic organic materials are presented. The materials' dynamic holographic recording capability and high resolution permit the operation of such a correlator in real time. Both theoretical and experimental results show that the photoanisotropic properties cause a dependence of the correlation output on the state of the polarization of the readout beam and can be used to produce an output polarization orthogonal to the input, which permits polarization filtering to be used, greatly increasing the signal-to-noise ratio. The effect of the saturation of the nonlinearity on correlation performance is investigated and is shown to be able to improve correlator recognition and discrimination. The correlation results of binary images and of a high-resolution synthetic-aperture radar image are presented, demonstrating excellent optical quality, nonlinear edge enhancement, and real-time operation.

TL;DR: Real-time optical image subtraction and edge enhancement based on a speckle modulation technique is carried out by using ferroelectric liquid-crystal polarization switches and a ferro Electric spatial light modulator as a real-time and multiple-exposure optical device.
Abstract: We carried out real-time optical image subtraction and edge enhancement based on a speckle modulation technique by using ferroelectric liquid-crystal polarization switches and a ferroelectric liquid-crystal spatial light modulator. A ferroelectric liquid-crystal spatial light modulator is employed as a real-time and multiple-exposure optical device, and successful results are obtained from three-exposure images modulated by speckles. Thus, image subtraction and edge enhancement are realized in real time. The whole operation is performed within several milliseconds with modest operating conditions. Because the spatial light modulator has a high resolution of greater than 100 line pairs/mm and can store fine speckle patterns, the image qualities we obtained are quite satisfactory.

11 Jun 2007TL;DR: In this article, an image processing method and apparatus for enhancing contrast is presented, which includes a determination unit that determines whether contrast enhancement processing should be performed on an input image; an intensity mapping unit that generates a plurality of images having different exposure times from the input image, using intensity mapping; and an image composition unit that composes the plurality of image into a composed image.
Abstract: Provided are an image processing method and apparatus for enhancing contrast. The image processing apparatus includes a determination unit that determines whether contrast enhancement processing should be performed on an input image; an intensity mapping unit that generates a plurality of images having different exposure times from the input image, using intensity mapping, if the contrast enhancement processing should be performed on the input image; and an image composition unit that composes the plurality of images into a composed image. Therefore, it is possible to reduce a color change or a false contour phenomenon that are generated in a related art contrast enhancement process.
