TL;DR: In this paper, the edge enhancement strength optimum for both compressed stored data and display data simultaneously in real-time was obtained by using a control unit that adaptively controls edge enhancement strengths.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain images of edge enhancement strength optimum for both compressed stored data and display data simultaneously in real time. SOLUTION: In an imaging unit 1, digital image data are produced from a video signal outputted from an imaging device 11 by a signal processing section 12, edge enhancement is performed by an edge enhancement section 13, zoom processing is performed by a zooming section 14 and the image data are inputted to a display unit 2 and a compression and storage unit 3, respectively. In the display unit 2, a resolution is converted by a resolution conversion section 21, edge enhancement is performed by an edge enhancement section 22, a driving signal is generated by a display control section 23, and the image data are displayed on a display 24. In the compression and storage unit 3, edge enhancement is performed by an edge enhancement section 31, and the image data are compressed by a compression section 32 and stored in a storage section 33. A control unit 4 adaptively controls edge enhancement strengths in the edge enhancement sections 13, 22 and 31 while being linked with a zoom magnification power in the zooming section 14. TL;DR: Experimental results show that nearly all the regions containing low contrast edges can be detected, and the adjustment of QPs for these regions can greatly protect the edges with no RD performance reduction.
Abstract: High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is the newest video coding standard which can significantly reduce the bit rate by 50% compared with existing standards. The key features and new tools in HEVC are designed for natural video sequences captured by a real camera. Different from natural videos, screen content contain much more edges in text and icon regions. The current video coding standards may blur or even remove low contrast edges, which are very important in screen content for human eyes to recognize the character and the icon. Therefore, this paper proposes an effective modification on HEVC to preserve the low contrast edges in screen content. First, discrete laplacian filter is adopted for edge detection, and then we adaptively adjust QPs for low contrast edge regions, which can be detected based on our designed measurement for edge contrast. Experimental results show that nearly all the regions containing low contrast edges can be detected, and the adjustment of QPs for these regions can greatly protect the edges with no RD performance reduction.

TL;DR: The visual and subjective evaluation shows that the proposed PNPA operation can effectively eliminate the influence of edge discontinuity which occurred due to noise and blurr in original captured image, as comparing to existing edge segmenting processes.
Abstract: Edge enhancement is derived from lack of accurate result from edge detection techniques. The image which is captured from long distances carries a lot of noise and blur which causes edge discontinuity. Although some novel algorithms which are based on cellular neural network, fuzzy enhancement and binary morphology have shown accuracy in order to obtain refined edge but still the problem of edge discontinuity arises. Eliminating discontinuity of edge a hybrid technique is proposed based on pixel neighbors pattern analysis PNPA. In the technique Canny operator for initial edge detection, PNPA operation for edge enhancement are performed for remote sensing satellite image successively. The visual and subjective evaluation shows that the proposed PNPA operation can effectively eliminate the influence of edge discontinuity which occurred due to noise and blurr in original captured image, as comparing to existing edge segmenting processes.
