Abstract: Recent advances in renewable energy technologies and changes in the electric utility infrastructures have increased the interest of the power utilities in utilisation of distributed generation (DG) resources to generate electricity. The recent trends in the development and utilisation of DG resources for power generation application are subject to the deregulation of the electric power sector and technical constraints to extend distribution and transmission networks to some areas. The electric power system planners, regulators and the policy makers have derived many benefits from integration of DG units into the distribution networks. These benefits depend on the characteristics of DG units such as photovoltaic (PV), wind system and reciprocating engines, characteristics of the loads, local renewable resources and network configuration. This study comprehensively reviews various research works on the technical, environmental and economic benefits of renewable DG integration such as line-loss reduction, reliability improvement, economic benefits and environmental pollution optimisation. These benefits can be optimised if all the renewable DG units are optimally sized, located and configured. This study also reviews the current status of renewable DG technologies based on different characteristics and the operational issues of integration of renewable DG into the electric power systems.

Abstract: Transportation electrification is one of the main research areas for the past decade. Electric vehicles (EVs) are taking over the market share of conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. The increasing popularity of EVs results in higher number of charging stations, which have significant effects on the electricity grid. Different charging strat2egies, as well as grid integration methods, are being developed to minimize the adverse effects of EV charging and to strengthen the benefits of EV grid integration. In this paper, a comprehensive review of the current situation of the EV market, standards, charging infrastructure, and the impact of EV charging on the grid is presented. The paper introduces the current EV status, and provides a comprehensive review on important international EV charging and grid interconnection standards. Different infrastructure configurations in terms of control and communication architectures for EV charging are studied and evaluated. The electric power market is studied by considering the participation roles of EV aggregators and individual EV owners, and different optimization and game based algorithms for EV grid integration management are reviewed. The paper specially presents an evaluation on how the future EV development, such as connected vehicles, autonomous driving, and shared mobility, would affect EV grid integration as well as the development of the power grid moves toward future energy Internet and how EVs would affect and benefit the development of the future energy Internet. Finally, the challenges and suggestions for the future development of the EV charging and grid integration infrastructure are evaluated and summarized.

Abstract: This article provides a survey on state estimation (SE) in electric power grids and examines the impact on SE of the technological changes being proposed as a part of the smart grid development. Although SE at the transmission level has a long history, further research and development of innovative SE schemes, including those for distribution systems, are needed to meet the new challenges presented by the requirements of the future grid. This article also presents some example topics that signal processing (SP) research can contribute to help meet those challenges.
