Abstract: This paper provides an overview of issues and opportunities associated with the use of biomass for electric power generation. Important physical characteristics of biomass and waste fuels are summarized, including comparisons with conventional fossil fuels, primarily coal. The paper also provides an overview of the current use of biomass and waste fuels for electric power generation. Biomass and waste fuels are currently used for approximately 9800 MW of electric generating capacity, including about 6100 MW of capacity fueled by wood/wood waste and about 2200 MW of capacity fueled with municipal solid waste. Perspectives on the future availability of biomass fuels (including energy crops) are addressed, as well as projected levels of market penetration for biomass power. By the year 2010, there is a potential for from 22,000 MW to as much as 70,000 MW of biomass-powered electric generating capacity in the U.S. Given the range of benefits offered by biomass, including reduced sulfur emissions, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, job creation, rural revitalization impacts, and new incentives under the Energy Policy Act of 1992, the potential use of biomass for power production could significantly expand in the future.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a traveling-wave thermoacoustic electricity generator, which employs a looped-tube travelling-wave engine to convert thermal energy into acoustic power, an ultra-compliant alternator within the engine loop to extract and convert the engine acoustic power to electricity, and an acoustic stub matching technique to match the alternator to the engine.

TL;DR: In this paper, some features of the smart grid have been discussed such as communications, demand response, and security, and microgrids and issues with integration of distributed energy sources are also considered.
Abstract: The smart grid is expected to revolutionize existing electrical grid by allowing two-way communications to improve efficiency, reliability, economics, and sustainability of the generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical power. However, issues associated with communication and management must be addressed before full benefits of the smart grid can be achieved. Furthermore, how to maximize the use of network resources and available power, how to ensure reliability and security, and how to provide self-healing capability need to be considered in the design of smart grids. In this paper, some features of the smart grid have been discussed such as communications, demand response, and security. Microgrids and issues with integration of distributed energy sources are also considered.

TL;DR: In this paper, a magnetic core has both power supply and data windings; the data winding has sections of opposite polarity so that the power supply signal imposed on the power winding cancels itself.
Abstract: The invention discloses a non-contact way to provide electrical power and two-way digital communications between a host computer and its peripheral modules, such as IC memory cards, modems, and A/D converters. A special magnetic core is employed to provide efficient transfer of both large amounts of electrical power and high speed digital communications through transformer action. Peripheral modules requiring different power supply voltages or different data voltage levels can be accommodated and intermixed with modules of other types in the same host system. The mechanical design of the connector includes detent structure to align the assembly in three dimensions, both upon mating, and under mechanical environmental stress conditions during operation. The magnetic core has both power supply and data windings; the data winding has sections of opposite polarity so that the power supply signal imposed on the data winding cancels itself.
