TL;DR: In this article, a system for controlling the electrical energy utilization in homes or small businesses is described, which includes a telephone to power line carrier interface unit, a new electric meter that measures energy with variable pricing, and an energy controller that modifies use depending on price.
Abstract: A novel system for controlling the electrical energy utilization in homes or small businesses is described. The developments include a telephone to power line carrier interface unit, a new electric meter that measures energy with variable pricing, and an energy controller that modifies use depending on price. The system provides for the marketing of electrical energy based on a supply/demand relationship using a real-time variable pricing scheme. A unique interface allows the customer to adjust energy utilization for heating or cooling, depending on comfort needs and the current price. Other electrical appliances such as electric water heaters can also be controlled automatically and optimally to achieve the lowest energy cost. A personal computer interface allows access to more detailed information and provides a means to personalize the system to a greater degree. The philosophy of this approach has been demonstrated, during field trials, to achieve the desired result of shifting some of the load from the peak to the valley. At the same time the users learned to use the system to lower their electric bills. >

TL;DR: In this article, a calibration circuit for a solid state electricity meter comprises a plurality of resistors formed on an integrated circuit, connected by an on-chip array of electrically controlled switches, such as MOSFETs, to signal processing circuitry driving the meter.
Abstract: A calibration circuit for a solid state electricity meter comprises a plurality of resistors formed on an integrated circuit. The resistors are connected by an on-chip array of electrically controlled switches, such as MOSFETs, to signal processing circuitry driving the meter. The resistors establish variable voltage divider networks which compensate the meter for phase, gain and offset errors distributed in the signal processing circuitry. The values of the variable voltage divider network may be established automatically during testing of the meter, by a digital computer, or semi-automatically, by a technician, to establish the "on" and "off" states of the various transistors of the array.

Abstract: An electricity meter transponder package includes an electricity meter and a cover for containing the meter. The cover is secured to the meter by a predetermined rotation of the cover with respect to the meter. A first electrical connector-half is fixedly mounted with respect to the meter, that connector-half having terminals electrically connected to the meter. A second electrical connector-half having terminals mateable with the terminals of the first connector-half is fixedly mounted with respect to the cover in a position such that the predetermined rotation of the cover with respect to the meter causes the terminals of the first and second connector-halves to mate to complete electrical connection between their respective terminals. At least one electrical circuit is carried by the cover, which circuit is electrically connected to at least some terminals of the second connector-half. Securing of the cover to the meter results in automatic electrical connection between the meter and the circuit carried by the cover.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a method of calibrating the diode detectors used in six-port network analyzers, without disconnecting the diodes, using only a precision variable attenuator or a power meter with no additional directional coupler.
Abstract: The authors present a novel method of calibrating the diode detectors used in six-port network analyzers, without disconnecting the diodes. The method uses only a precision variable attenuator or a power meter with no additional directional coupler. The important feature of this method is that no actual measurement of power is required to calibrate the diode detectors for six-port operation. It is very well suited to in-situ calibration of the diode detection circuits for operation of the six-port with pulse signals when the average power detected by the power meter drops to very low levels for low duty cycles. In these cases, the precision variable attenuator method is required. Measurement results are presented. >

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors deal with computer-based testing of a three-phase induction watthour meter in the presence of harmonic distortion and show that the maximum negative error is observed when the harmonic current was in phase with the harmonic voltage.
Abstract: The authors deal with computer-based testing of a three-phase induction watthour meter in the presence of harmonic distortion. Two three-phase harmonic generators produce the distorted current and voltage waveforms. Each waveform has a prespecified harmonic magnitude and phase. Therefore, balanced or unbalanced conditions can be simulated in the testing. A fiber-optic sensor is designed to convert the rotation of the disk of the meter into digital signals to be stored in an IBM PC/AT. A data acquisition system transfers the samples of current and voltage waveforms so that the power and energy can be computed for comparison. Induction watthour meters are shown to be affected by harmonic distortion. The error increases at light loading conditions. For a three-element watthour meter, the maximum negative error was observed when the harmonic current was in phase with the harmonic voltage. This applies to all harmonic orders. The maximum positive error was observed when the harmonic current was shifted by 180 degrees . >
