TL;DR: In this paper, a revenue accuracy electrical power meter provides a power supply utilizing high and low capacitive storage banks to supply sufficient energy to survive short duration power quality events which jeopardize the meter's operating power.
Abstract: Power quality detection, monitoring, reporting, recording and communication in a revenue accuracy electrical power meter is disclosed. All recorded and computed data is moved to non-volatile storage via direct memory access transfer in the event that a power quality event jeopardizes the operating power of the meter. The meter provides a power supply utilizing high and low capacitive storage banks to supply sufficient energy to survive short duration power quality events which jeopardize the meter's operating power. The power supply also enables the meter to initiate and complete a shut-down routine allowing the storage of he recorded and computed data. Further, a separate power supply utilizing a capacitive storage bank is utilized to operate a communications device when the operating power is lost. The communications device switches from the meter power supply to the alternate capacitive storage bank when an power outage occurs and then initiates a connection with an external network to report the loss of operating power and send the appropriate power management data.

TL;DR: A new electronic shifter based on stochastic signal processing is proposed, able to solve the algebraic equations involved in the calculations of reactive power and energy in the frequency-domain approach.
Abstract: There is not a universally recognised definition of reactive power which can be applied under non-sinusoidal conditions. In general, a 90/spl deg/ voltage shift is used by reactive meters. A new electronic shifter based on stochastic signal processing is proposed taht allows for simple and cost-effective digital implementation of a reactive power and energy meter. The proposed stochastic arithmetic is able to solve the algebraic equations involved in the calculations of reactive power and energy in the frequency-domain approach.

TL;DR: In this paper, the phase compensation on current transformers is applied to compensate for the non-linearity in the phase shift for the transformers, where the acquisition of one of the two samples for the current signals is delayed and time shifted averaged, such that the average of two signals provides a compensated signal.
Abstract: An electronic power meter for metering the consumption of electrical energy on power lines includes phase compensation on current transformers, whereby the acquisition of one of the two samples for the current signals is delayed and time shifted averaged, such that the average of the two signals provides a compensated signal. The amount of delay is determined from the phase lag the current transformers exhibit during the process of calibration for phase compensation. The amount of compensation that is applied varies with current, thus compensation for the non-linearity in the phase shift for the current transformers. The degree of non-linearity is computed which results in only two variables that define the phase lag at higher current and the degree of non-linearity. The technique helps in using inexpensive current transformers in the meter.

TL;DR: In this article, the relay states and pulse counts are transmitted to the building unit, and the states of the relays and pulses are regenerated by the building units as outputs to the energy management system.
Abstract: A meter unit, co-located to an electric meter, and a building unit, co-located with an energy management system, cooperate to deliver electric meter relay pulses from the electric meter to an energy management system via a wireless link. Meter relay pulses are input to the meter unit from the electric meter, relay states and pulse counts are transmitted to the building unit, and the states of the relays and pulses are regenerated by the building unit as outputs to the energy management system. The pulses output from the building unit perform as though they were created by the meter originally, but without the traditional wired connection. The system provides for error correction should a pulse count transmission be lost, as well as repeating of an end-of-interval pulse so that the energy management system may synchronize its data collection and operation to the measurements from the meter.

Abstract: Discusses pneumatic air power on the basis of an energy transformation analysis of an air compressor and actuator. The work-producing potential of compressed air is proposed to represent the air power, and the definition and calculation of air power are given. Some calculations of air power are also shown in various conditions of air pressure and temperature. Then, a new meter named an "air power meter", which is under patent application, is proposed with the purpose of realizing air energy consumption management and promoting energy-saving activities in factories. The design of the meter, including its measurement method and its configuration, is introduced. It is clear that air power should be measured by obtaining the air pressure, temperature and flow rate. Furthermore, the function of accumulation, dealing with air energy consumption over a period, is also suggested. Lastly, some applications of the air power meter are suggested. By using the air power meter, the monitoring of air energy consumption and its distribution in factories becomes possible and easy. It is expected that the air power meter will play an important role in compressed-air energy-saving activities in factories in the near future.

Abstract: This paper has developed a PC based energy management system associated with automatic meter reading and various load control functions for load management of industrial and commercial customers. Automatic meter reading configured by a programmable logic controller and power meter supports the function of recording 20 power parameters retrieved from an academic substation. Load control functions; which consist of demand control, timer control, cycling on/off control and direct control, are designed to effectively reduce peak load and to save electrical energy. Several types of software program coded by Visual Basic, PLC ladder language, and partial Diamond package, are designed to integrate all hardware equipment in energy management system. The entire system has been installed and successfully operated since October 1997. Statistical data collected from 1997/10 to 1999/10 indicate that the proposed effect for peak load cutting and energy saving may be justified.
