TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a power aggregation system for electric vehicles, where individual Internet connections are established to numerous electric resources intermittently connected to the power grid, such as electric vehicles.
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for a power aggregation system. In one implementation, a service establishes individual Internet connections to numerous electric resources intermittently connected to the power grid, such as electric vehicles. The Internet connection may be made over the same wire that connects the resource to the power grid. The service optimizes power flows to suit the needs of each resource and each resource owner, while aggregating flows across numerous resources to suit the needs of the power grid. The service can bring vast numbers of electric vehicle batteries online as a new, dynamically aggregated power resource for the power grid. Electric vehicle owners can participate in an electricity trading economy regardless of where they plug into the power grid.

TL;DR: The SPOT architecture and design meet challenges unique to wireless sensor networks and other low power systems, such as orders of magnitude difference in current draws between sleep and active states, short-duration power spikes during periods of brief activity, and the need for minimum perturbation of the system under observation.
Abstract: We present SPOT, a scalable power observation tool that enables in situ measurement of nodal power and energy over a dynamic range exceeding four decades or a temporal resolution of microseconds. Using SPOT, every node in a sensor network can now be instrumented, providing unparalleled visibility into the dynamic power profile of applications and system software. Power metering at every node enables previously impossible empirical evaluation of low power designs at scale. The SPOT architecture and design meet challenges unique to wireless sensor networks and other low power systems, such as orders of magnitude difference in current draws between sleep and active states, short-duration power spikes during periods of brief activity, and the need for minimum perturbation of the system under observation.

Abstract: The power consumption of a streaming-media server can be obtained in real time by using the virtual-instrumentation software described in this paper without using an additional hardware meter. We have built a model to estimate the power consumption from the observation of experimental data that consists of tracking the CPU utilization and detecting the operation parameters of the measured servers. When calculated in real time, the CPU utilization can respond to the dynamic change of the power consumption of the measured servers. The operation parameters represent the hardware configuration of the measured servers. We also propose three methods to obtain these parameters: filled- manually, hardware-revised, and software-revised parameter estimating. We have constructed the virtual-instrumentation software according to this power model to measure the power consumption of the streaming-media server. To facilitate the measurement process, we have also designed a suitable graphic-user interface for it. Our virtual-instrumentation software with three parameter-estimating methods has been tested by way of comparison with measurement results obtained by a power meter. The average power values of the hardware-revised method are found to yield mean errors of the estimate within 3%. The mean error of the software-revised method is within 6%. However, the filled- manually method may underestimate the power consumption by as much as 11%.

Abstract: An electricity demand limiting system for limiting the electricity consumption of at least one resistive load device. The demand limiting system includes a consumption controller associated with the resistive load device that is operable to infinitely vary the amount of electricity being consumed by the load device. The consumption control device is in operative communication with a load controller such that the load controller can generate a control signal to affect the operation of the consumption control circuit. Preferably, the consumption control circuit is a triac-based circuit that receives the control signal from the load controller and limits the amount of electricity consumed by the resistive load device. The load controller can receive input signals from sensors monitoring the electricity delivery system or from the premise electricity meter. Further, the load controller can receive external inputs from a third party that determine the operation of the load controller in limiting the electricity demands of the resistive load device.

TL;DR: In this paper, a quick response system is incorporated into the TW ACS for mapping an outage in the electrical distribution system without having to continuously poll the electrical meters connected to the system.
Abstract: An electrical distribution system (EDS) wherein electrical current flows through a bus (B) to a feeder (R), and through the feeder to laterals (L1, L2). From the laterals, current flows through step-down transformers (T1-T4), each of which has an associated fuse (F3-F6) respectively. From each transformer, the current is routed to individual using sites (houses, office buildings, factories) each of which has an electrical meter with an associated transponder (Tr1-Tr8). The distribution system employs a TVVACS by which the meters are polled from a master station and distribution substation (DS) to send commands to, and receive responses from, each meter via its associated transponder. A quick response system is incorporated into the TW ACS for mapping an outage in the electrical distribution system without having to continuously poll the electrical meters connected to the system.

TL;DR: In this paper, an apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for a high efficiency redundant power system, where first and second power supplies are connected in parallel to power a load.
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for a high efficiency redundant power system. First and second power supplies are connected in parallel to power a load. Each power supply includes a primary stage and a regulator stage. Each primary stage regulates voltage on an internal bus that is input for each regulator stage. Each regulator stage regulates a regulated bus connected to the load. A power meter detects power provided to the load and determines if the provided power is below a predefined power threshold. A regulator control module shuts down the regulator stage of the first power supply after the provided power falls below the predefined power threshold so the second power supply powers the load and the primary stage of the first power supply remains operational. A recovery module starts up the regulator stage of the first power supply after failure of the second power supply.

Abstract: Summary The current energy saving technologies rely on conventional data logging systems, where the current methods in retrieving the energy data is not convenient, and the cost of the data logging systems is high. The Automatic energy Meter Reading (AMR) technology is network-based applications used by electric/energy companies to increase performance and reliability of their energy meter reading and management systems. A mobile agent is a program (code and data) that can autonomously migrate from host to host in a network of heterogeneous computer systems and fulfill a task specified by its owner. Intelligent and secure Automatic Meter Reading and Management using Mobile Agents can be of great importance for municipalities and energy distribution companies so as to minimize the number of traditional visits required by the distribution company, hence decreasing the number of employees used in performing this traditional time consuming and high cost work. In this work we will start by surveying the current technologies and techniques used in handling remote meter reading and management. New modeling and simulation results for different configurations and techniques of automatic energy meter reading and management systems using mobile agents will be presented and compared to traditional client server techniques.

TL;DR: In this article, a laser power meter based on water as an absorbing medium has been developed to measure multi-kilowatt CO2 laser power with high sensitivity and accuracy, where the unique feature is the centre cone, which diverges the beam and reduces the power density thus reducing the possibility of vapourization.
Abstract: A laser power meter based on water as an absorbing medium has been developed to measure multi-kilowatt CO2 laser power with high sensitivity and accuracy. Water absorbs CO2 laser radiation readily within a very thin layer. Though water has large thermal capacity, due to short absorption length, it could vapourize at high laser powers. In order to circumvent this problem, this power meter has a centre cone and a rapidly spinning water film as the calorimetric medium. The unique feature in this development is the centre cone, which diverges the beam and reduces the power density thus reduces the possibility of vapourization. This minimizes the error in measurements. Due to the rapidly moving fluid film, it exhibits fast response at low as well as high power levels.
