TL;DR: The channel capacity calculation shows reliable results in the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) band and enables to integrate new smart grids’ applications and services based on the existing NB-PLC communication for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI).
Abstract: Narrowband powerline communication (NB-PLC) systems represent a key step for the real development of smart grids’ applications in the medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) networks. This article sums up the results of a complete experimental measurement campaign aimed at investigating the low voltage NB-PLC channel in the frequency range from 9 to 500 kHz in various sites (i.e., rural, urban etc.) located in France. The noise features in time-frequency representation are studied at five different sites between the transformer substation and the smart electricity meter. The main contribution of this study consists in estimating the theoretical channel capacity which constitutes a major interest for the users and actors of the electrical system. The channel capacity calculation shows reliable results in the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) band (a few Mbits/s). The quality of the communication in the FCC band enables to integrate new smart grids’ applications and services based on the existing NB-PLC communication for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI).

TL;DR: A new embedded technology based approach for automated energy meter reading system is proposed which enables the meter readings to be updated onto the web server automatically on a regular interval basis and sends bills to customers each month.
Abstract: A new embedded technology based approach for automated energy meter reading system is proposed which enables the meter readings to be updated onto the web server automatically on a regular interval basis and sends bills to customers each month. It provides a facility of recharging the energy meters remotely. Customers can pay bills of postpaid meters and can recharge the prepaid meters by sending a message to the service provider. The meter readings are sent to nearby located central station (gateway) using RF link and from there to web server using GSM. It also provides the facility of electricity tamper detection. The wireless controlling of meter reading system is mainly done using ARM 7 microcontroller. Embedded C is used for ARM coding and web server is designed using HTML. Database is created using MySQL.

TL;DR: The considerations to establish a favorable environment to develop the first step toward Smart Grid are described, taking like a starting point the deployment of an advanced metering infrastructure system in a major Utility in the south west of Colombia.
Abstract: Utilities are considering the adoption of guidelines for the evolution of the electric grid in the near future, better known as Smart Grid. An important approach to this evolution is the improvement of energy meter management and the implantation of demand response and demand control programs supported by an advanced metering infrastructure. This paper describes the considerations to establish a favorable environment to develop the first step toward Smart Grid, taking like a starting point the deployment of an advanced metering infrastructure system in a major Utility in the south west of Colombia. The design of the communications architecture using Wireless Local Area Networks and ZigBee is presented, along with the performance evaluation of the network model.

TL;DR: In this article, an arrangement for use in connection with an electricity meter is presented, which includes an electrical meter housing and at least one connection between a first conductor and a second conductor carrying line voltage.
Abstract: An arrangement for use in connection with an electricity meter includes an electricity meter housing and at least one connection between a first conductor and a second conductor carrying line voltage. The arrangement further includes a processing circuit that is configured to obtain a first voltage measurement within the meter housing on a first side of the at least one connection, and to obtain a second voltage measurement on a second side of the at least one connection. The processing circuit is further configured to determine a value corresponding to an impedance across the at least one connection.

TL;DR: In this article, a system for calibrating an energy meter is presented, in which a rotor rotates at an angular velocity generally proportional to the energy input to the meter, and a test apparatus is responsive to rotation of the rotor to generate a test signal having a predetermined parameter.
Abstract: A system for calibrating an energy meter is provided. The energy meter has a rotor which rotates at an angular velocity generally proportional to the energy input to the meter. A reference transducer receives an energy input for generating a reference signal having a predetermined parameter, such as frequency, generally proportional to the energy input. A test apparatus is responsive to rotation of the rotor to generate a test signal having a predetermined parameter, such as frequency, generally proportional to the angular velocity of the rotor. An error signal generator receives the reference signal and the test signal upon fractional rotation of the rotor and generates an error signal to indicate the amount of error between the frequency of the test signal and a calibration value corresponding to the frequency of the reference signal. The meter is calibrated based on the error signal. A related method is also disclosed for calibrating the meter.
