TL;DR: In this paper, a home area network (HAN)-based domestic load energy consumption monitoring prototype device is presented as part of an advanced metering system (AMS), which can be placed on individual loads or configured to measure several loads as a whole.
Abstract: This paper presents a home area network (HAN)-based domestic load energy consumption monitoring prototype device as part of an advanced metering system (AMS). This device can be placed on individual loads or configured to measure several loads as a whole. The wireless communication infrastructure is supported on IEEE 805.12.04 radios that run a ZigBee stack. Data acquisition concerning load energy transit is processed in real time and the main electrical parameters are then transmitted through a RF link to a wireless terminal unit, which works as a data logger and as a human-machine interface. Voltage and current sensing are implemented using Hall effect principle-based transducers, while C code is developed on two 16/32-bit microcontroller units (MCUs). The main features and design options are then thoroughly discussed. The main contribution of this paper is that the proposed metering system measures the reactive energy component through the Hilbert transform for low cost measuring device systems.

TL;DR: In this article, an autonomic and automatic meter adjustment mechanism for an electric meter is used for the meter adjustment, so that the adjustment operation of the electric meter can be performed without a meter adjustment table but only by a power source.
Abstract: The invention relates to a simple and convenient autonomic and automatic meter adjusting method. According to the method, an autonomic and automatic meter adjustment mechanism for an electric meter is used for the meter adjustment, so that the adjustment operation of the electric meter can be performed without a meter adjustment table but only by a power source, and therefore, not only the meter adjustment steps are simplified, but also the cost is reduced; and the method has high meter adjustment precision and high production repeatability, is favorable for production automation, reduces the influence of many human factors on the product quality, ensures the stability and reliability of the product quality, and greatly improves the qualified rate of the product.

TL;DR: In this paper, a potential failure condition of an electrical connection between an electricity meter and a meter socket in an electrical line that provides power from a power supply to an electrical load through the electricity meter, is detected.
Abstract: A method and apparatus that monitors and controls the operation of an electricity meter and prevents a failure of and/or damage to the electricity meter. A potential failure condition of an electrical connection between an electricity meter and a meter socket in an electrical line that provides power from a power supply to an electrical load through the electricity meter, is detected. A correction time may be determined based on a temperature in the vicinity of the electrical connection and a current through the electrical connection. The correction time indicates an amount of time that is available before a predicted failure of the electrical connection will occur. The method determines whether the electricity meter is in an imminent failure condition based on the correction time or the information used to detect the potential failure condition of the electrical connection.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a power line carrier AMR (automatic meter reading) system, which is currently being tested in several major pilot schemes and is unique in offering data rates of up to 19,200 bps over both LV and MV (11 kV) distribution networks.
Abstract: This paper describes a new power line carrier AMR (automatic meter reading) system which is currently being tested in several major pilot schemes. The system is believed to be unique in offering data rates of up to 19,200 bps over both LV and MV (11 kV) distribution networks. Novel, low cost, noninvasive inductive signal coupling techniques have been developed to facilitate cost-effective communications over underground and overhead MV networks. A programmable electricity meter has been developed in order to demonstrate a wide range of system benefits, including AMR, tariff and load management, tokenless prepayment, quality monitoring and load research.
