TL;DR: In this paper, a multichannel power line transceiver, a wireless transceiver and a power meter are used to measure power consumption information on a power line inductively coupled with the power meter, which can be wirelessly received by a remote monitoring station or transmitted across the Internet for storage, analysis and billing.
Abstract: A wireless electrical power metering system is provided. A processor having a multichannel power line transceiver, a wireless transceiver, and a power meter attached thereto measures power consumption information on a power line inductively coupled with the power meter. The processor converts the power consumption information into IP-based data, and transmits same over the wireless transceiver. The information can be wirelessly received by a remote monitoring station or transmitted across the Internet for storage, analysis, and billing. The processor generates appliance control signals and generates same across the multichannel power line transceiver to remotely control appliances in response to power consumption trends. The processor provides firewall capabilities, and relays information between a wired or wireless network and a power line network, thereby expanding the size of existing household networks. Further, the processor allows multiple dwellings to be networked using power lines, and households to be connected to the Internet via a power line network.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors have presented different policy and current status as well as future projects and objectives of smart grid development in several countries. And compared some main aspects about latest products of smart meter from different companies.
Abstract: Smart meter is one of the most important devices used in the smart grid (SG). The smart meter is an advanced energy meter that obtains information from the end users' load devices and measures the energy consumption of the consumers and then provides added information to the utility company and/or system operator. Several sensors and control devices, supported by dedicated communication infrastructure, are utilized in a smart meter. This paper outlines some smart meter's aspects and functions of smart meter. In addition, it introduces two basic types of smart meter system's communication technologies: Radio Frequency (RF) and Power Line Carrier (PLC) and recent advances with regard to these two technologies. This paper also presents different policy and current status as well as future projects and objectives of SG development in several countries. Finally, the paper compares some main aspects about latest products of smart meter from different companies.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system for remote monitoring of electricity consumption is described, in one embodiment the system may comprise a plurality of electric meters, a pluralityof communication devices having a unique address and defining a wireless communication network, and a site controller.
Abstract: A system for providing remote monitoring of electricity consumption is provided. Briefly described, in one embodiment the system may comprise a plurality of electric meters, a plurality of communication devices having a unique address and defining a wireless communication network, and a site controller. Each of the plurality of electric meters may be configured to measure the electricity consumption of a load attached to the electric meter. Each of the plurality of communication devices may be associated with one of the plurality of electric meters and configured to receive data related to the electricity consumption of the electric meter data and generate a transmit message using a predefined communication protocol being implemented by the wireless communication network. The transmit message may comprise the unique identifier and the data related to the electricity consumption of the electric meter. The site controller may be configured for communication with the wireless communication network and configured to receive the transmit message from one of the plurality of communication devices, identify the electric meter associated with the transmit message, and provide information related to the transmit message to a wide area network for delivery to a host computer.

TL;DR: In this paper, an energy management and building automation system including a local area network or home automation data bus is described, where each load to be controlled is connected to the bus via a control module.
Abstract: An energy management and building automation system including a local area network or home automation data bus. Each load to be controlled is connected to the bus via a control module. A first microcomputer preferably is placed externally to the customer premises, adjacent the electric utility power meter. A second microcomputer preferably is placed inside the customer premises. The two microcomputers communicate with each other and with the various load control modules. The first microcomputer communicates with the utility company via any appropriate communications link. The second microcomputer serves, in part, as an input/output terminal for the system, allowing the customer to set parameters and query the system as to historical and current energy and power usage information by individual loads or by the entire customer premises. It displays reports requested by the customer, relative to current and historical energy consumption by individual loads and/or the premises and also displays messages transmitted by the utility company and by either microcomputer. The first microcomputer acts as a master controller and/or network server, communicating with the world outside the premises and being the primary data collector and operator of load control modules, with the second microcomputer providing certain backup and input/output (e.g., events scheduling and report generation) functions.
