Abstract: A motor-driven type power steering apparatus for assisting a driver in manipulating a steering wheel of a motor vehicle includes a steering-wheel return state decision circuit for deciding whether the steering wheel is in the state to be returned to a center position, a control quantity generating and selecting circuit for generating control quantities corresponding to respective driving modes on the basis of a control quantity of the electric motor and selecting one of the control quantities in dependence on the result of the decision made as to the return state of the steering wheel, and a conversion circuit for converting the control quantities into PWM duty ratios, respectively In the normal steering operation, switching elements for energizing the motor are driven with the PWM duty ratio corresponding to a first driving mode, while upon return of the steering wheel to the center position, the switching elements are driven with the PWM duty ratio corresponding to a second driving mode A smooth steering torque control is realized with the steering-wheel return characteristic being improved

Abstract: A force feedback wheel is provided on a mouse or other interface device manipulated by a user. A sensor detects a position of the mouse in a workspace and sends a position signal to a connected host computer indicating that position. A rotatable wheel is mounted upon the manipulandum and rotates about a wheel axis, where a wheel sensor provides a wheel signal to the host computer indicating a rotary position of the wheel. A wheel actuator coupled to the rotatable wheel applies a computer-modulated force to the wheel about the wheel axis. The mouse can be a standard mouse or a force-feedback mouse, where forces are applied in the mouse workspace. The host computer is preferably running a graphical environment, where the force applied to the wheel can correspond with an event or interaction displayed in the graphical environment. The wheel can also be included on other devices such as remote controls and radios.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for simulating the forces acting on the steering wheel or other control device of a vehicle. The apparatus uses an electrical motor coupled to a steering wheel in the preferred embodiment. The electrical motor is driven by a computer running software which received data regarding the real world forces which would be acting upon a real steering wheel in a car under similar conditions. A software driver coupled to a position-sensing transducer on the steering wheel calculates the steering wheel position and velocity and sends this data to a model process not forming part of the invention. The model process then calculates the conditions affecting the simulated vehicle and outputs data reflecting the real world forces which would affect the steering wheel of the actual car under similar conditions. This data is used to calculate a force number which in turn drives a driver amplifier and motor combination coupled to the steering wheel of the simulated vehicle to simulate the forces that the driver of a real vehicle would feel.
