Abstract: This paper presents the performance analysis of a hybrid filter composed of passive and active filters connected in series. The analysis is done by evaluating the influence of passive filter parameters variations and the effects that different active power filter's gain have in the compensation performance of the hybrid scheme. The compensation performance is quantified by evaluating the attenuation factor in a power distribution system energizing high-power nonlinear loads compensated with passive filters and then improved with the connection of a series active power filter. Finally, compensation characteristics of the hybrid topology are tested on a 10-kVA experimental setup.

Abstract: A general procedure is outlined for optimizing the damping of an input filter using a single resistor. This procedure is employed to derive the equations governing optimal damping of several basic filter circuits. Design tradeoffs are discussed. Additional criteria are derived that allow employment of these results in design of multiple-section cascaded filters with damping.

Abstract: In this paper, an oscillation compensation technique is proposed to improve the stability margin of an electrical system constituted by a dc power supply, an LC filter, and a constant power load. This is realized here by an actuator (inverter-permanent-magnet synchronous motor). To design the compensator, input impedance of the constant power load and output impedance of the filter are required and derived in this paper. To develop the load input impedance expression, small signal approximation is employed and all dynamics are taken into account except by the inverter ones only, which can often be neglected in practical applications. Then, the control structure of the whole system is slightly modified to implement the oscillation compensation block that increases the stability margin, and thus, permits to reduce the dc-link capacitance value. In this paper, the proposed method is applied to an actuator designed for aerospace applications. The influence of the actuator control parameters and the input filter parameters on the stability of the dc-link voltage is discussed. Simulations and experimentations confirm the validity of the proposed approach.

Abstract: Wind power is one of the most promising emerging renewable energy technologies for distributed generation (DG). In this paper, a new nine-level active neutral-point-clamped (9L ANPC) converter is proposed for the grid connection of large wind turbines (WTs) to improve the waveform quality of the converter output voltage and current. Therefore, the bulky passive grid filters can be reduced or even removed. The topology, operating principles, control schemes, and main features, as well as semiconductor device selection of the proposed converter are presented in detail. The floating capacitor voltage control based on redundant switching states and capacitor prioritization is detailed. A comparison between the new topology and other existing 9L topologies is presented to illustrate the characteristics and performance of the new converter. The proposed 9L ANPC converter is studied in the case of the grid connection of a 6-MW WT without using passive grid filters in DG systems. Simulation and experiment results are presented to validate the proposed converter topology and control schemes. The proper operation and the compliance to the harmonic limit standards of the filterless grid-connected WT system are verified by simulation results.

Abstract: This paper presents a fully-digital-controlled shunt hybrid filter for damping of harmonic propagation in power distribution systems. The harmonic propagation is caused by resonance between line inductances and power capacitors installed for power factor correction. A possible solution to damping out harmonic propagation is based on installation of a shunt pure active filter at the end of a feeder. This paper proposes a shunt hybrid active filter characterized by series connection of a seventh-tuned LC filter per phase and a small-rated three-phase active filter. Like the pure filter, the hybrid filter is connected to the end bus of a feeder. The capacitor of the LC filter imposes a high impedance to the fundamental frequency, so that the fundamental voltage appears across the capacitor. This unique feature allows us to directly connect the hybrid filter to the 6.6-kV power line without step-down transformers. Furthermore, the capacitor used in this hybrid filter is lighter, cheaper and smaller than the transformer used in the pure filter. Theoretical analysis, along with experimental results obtained from a 200-V, 20-kW laboratory system, verifies the viability and effectiveness of the proposed hybrid filter.
