Fraud in accounting, organizations and society: extending the boundaries of research

Abstract: Concerns about fraud have been of practical significance for as long as written records have been kept, and indeed may be a significant reason for the development of writing and record keeping (Basu and Waymire, 2006 and Ezzamel, 2012). Much of the fraud literature starts with a recitation of infamous accounting (Clikeman, 2009) and corporate scandals and frauds (Punch, 1996), and these often excite public interest and concern. Concern with fraud and white collar crime affects public confidence in institutions as diverse as stock markets, auditors, bankers, corporate executives and government (Sanders & Hamilton, 1997). Various corporate, social and political scandals, fraud and corruption in government, and the fraudulent practices in politics, financial institutions, corporations, NGOs and religious institutions impact the legitimacy of such institutions. It also impacts how economic, political and social life is organized, and our attitudes and policies toward innovation, entrepreneurship and compliance to rules and law (Snider, 2000). Yet we also know that there is much moral ambiguity in life and managers (and accountants) spend much of their life in ‘moral mazes’ (Jackal, 1988), negotiating and making sense of everyday fraud and wrongdoing.

Chinese People's Congresses and Legislative Embeddedness Understanding Early Organizational Development

Abstract: Evidence from medieval Europe and modern China suggests that cooperation with strong executives plays a larger role in early legislative development than is generally acknowledged: that under conditions of absolutism (or near-absolutism), acceptance and exploitation of subordination may be a means to organizational development. In this article, the author relies primarily on interview data and Chinese field research to show that early legislative development can occur without significantly increasing conflict with established authorities and without winning autonomy. The author further argues that legislative embeddedness, as measured by clarified and expanded jurisdiction and increased capacity, is a product less of conflict than of executive support and attention, and that support and attention in the early stages of organizational development can be understood in terms of a legislature's presence, its reliability and usefulness, and the political standing of its leaders. The dynamics of Asian business systems in a globalizing era

Abstract: Globalization tendencies are transforming the nature and organization of business systems. This is particularly the case in the Asia-Pacific region where business systems are socially and institutionally embedded. In this article, I argue that the dialectical tendencies of globalization towards homogenization and differentiation have differential impacts on the configurations and dynamics of Asian business systems and their constituents. While these business systems tend to be relatively enduring over time because of their historical legacies and institutional embeddedness, major business firms emerging from these national business systems may be much more susceptible to changes brought about by globalization tendencies.
