TL;DR: In this paper, it is argued that the internal and external embeddedness of a subsidiary hosting an innovation development project subsequently influences divisional headquarters involvement in the transfer of that innovation, i.e., the relationships that firms have with each other in the innovation development phase, is brought to the fore as an important factor for MNE subsidiaries hosting innovation development projects.

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical model that places emphasis on the role of local ecology, organizational complexity, and coalitional embeddedness is developed to investigate the factors that contribute to the effectiveness of neighborhood organization.
Abstract: Urban redevelopment forces have created major and complex issues for residents in neighborhoods. Faced with such threats, many neighborhoods have become proactive and have attempted to protect and improve their environment through collective organization and social action. This paper investigates the factors that contribute to the effectiveness of neighborhood organization. A theoretical model that places emphasis on the role of local ecology, organizational complexity, and coalitional embeddedness is developed. The model is tested using data collected from neighborhood associations. Greater effectiveness is associated with socioeconomic status, neighborhood investments, and environmental threats. Organizational resources and coalitional embeddedness were found to be the most important factors explaining effectiveness.

TL;DR: In this paper, an integrated framework that considers the sources, mechanisms, outcomes, and strategic implications of embeddedness is presented, including cross-level issues (such as collective cognition and nesting), as well as issues related to temporality, networks, and methodology.
Abstract: We review research on organizations to highlight prevailing and emerging conceptions for embeddedness. An integrated framework that considers the sources, mechanisms, outcomes, and strategic implications of embeddedness is presented. Also, promising research directions for embeddedness approaches, including cross-level issues (such as collective cognition and nesting), as well as issues related to temporality, networks, and methodology are identified.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors reflect on some of the theoretical and methodological implications of approaches that accept the cultural embeddedness of planning, taking in particular work by Tilly (1984) and Brenner (2001) to explore typologies of comparative research, and the concept of path dependence as the means for articulating causality.
Abstract: Comparative research in spatial planning and urban policy runs the risk of being undertaken with insufficient awareness of the extent to which they are culturally embedded. This article reflects on some of the theoretical and methodological implications of approaches that accept the cultural embeddedness of planning, taking in particular work by Tilly (1984) and Brenner (2001) to explore typologies of comparative research, and the concept of path dependence as the means for articulating causality. It concludes by considering some of the consequences of such approaches for the conduct of research.

TL;DR: In this article, the concept of embeddedness, which is central to the social network perspective, is introduced and two ethnographic cases, gift giving among!Kung and ritual celebrations in a Javanese village, illustrate the potential of social network analysis for investigating embeddedness.
Abstract: As the world becomes more complex, the work of anthropology, both theoretical and practical, becomes more demanding. People at the local level are increasingly being drawn into larger circuits through economic linkages, demographic processes, social interactions, and flows of information that transcend local and national boundaries. Such global linkages and the new embeddedness they produce require more sophisticated approaches to ethnography. This paper proposes social network analysis as a valuable approach to that end. The concept of embeddedness, which is central to the social networks perspective, is introduced. Hierarchical embeddedness of the local level in the larger society, economy, and polity is distinguished from domain embeddedness, the interpenetration of different fields of activity. Network studies of two ethnographic cases, gift giving among !Kung and ritual celebrations in a Javanese village, illustrate the potential of social network analysis for investigating embeddedness. The paper co...
