Abstract: A study of the distribution of contact stresses on a foundation-soil interface is presented based on experimental results from a rigid circular footing with smooth base and sides. The effects of magnitude of applied force, repeated loading and embedment are considered with the view of comparing the existing theories.

Abstract: THE CHOICE OF THE SPRING CONSTANT IN THE PAPER DISCUSSED IS THE MOST IMPORTANT OF THE THREE PARAMETERS INVOLVED IN A LUMPED SYSTEM. THE SPRING CONSTANT INVOLVES AN EVALUATION OF THE SHEAR MODULUS OF THE SOIL, AN ASSUMPTION OF THE POISSON'S RATIO, AND A THEORY WHICH RELATES THE APPLIED LOAD TO THE SETTLEMENT FOR A GIVEN GEOMETRICAL CONFIGURATION. HOWEVER, REAL FOUNDATIONS ARE EMBEDDED AT A CERTAIN DEPTH BELOW THE SURFACE AND IT IS PREFERABLE TO EVALUATE THE EFFECT OF EMBEDMENT UPON THESE SPRING CONSTANTS. IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTS OF EMBEDMENT OF A RIGID CIRCULAR FOUNDATION, A SOLUTION WAS PREPARED BY THE FINITE-ELEMENT METHOD. THE MODEL USED AND THE SOLUTION PREPARED ARE PRESENTED. IT IS NOTED THAT WHEN THE EMBEDMENT DEPTH BECOMES SMALL, THE FOOTING NO LONGER ACTS IN A RIGID FASHION. THIS ACCOUNTS FOR THE SLIGHT VARIATION IN THE SPRING CONSTANTS AROUND THE ORIGIN IN THE FIGURE PRESENTED. FROM THIS FIGURE THE INCREASE IN RESONANT FREQUENCY AS A FUNCTION OF THE DEPTH OF EMBEDMENT CAN BE ESTIMATED. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD CAN BE USED FOR EVALUATIONS OF SPRING CONSTANTS FOR OTHER MODES OF LOADING. REFERENCES: DESIGN PROCEDURES FOR DYNAMICALLY LOADED FOUNDATIONS, R. V. Abstract: A PROCESS FOR MANUFACTURING BEARINGS, PARTICULARLY MICROBEARINGS COMPRISING, EMBEDDING AN ELONGATED SUPPORT IN AT LEAST ONE PARTICULAR MATERIAL SO AS TO PRODUCE A BAR OF THIS MATERIAL WHICH IS TRAVERSED LONGITUDINALLY BY THE SUPPORT, SLICING THE BAR INTO FRAGMENTS THICKNESS OF WHICH CORRESPONDS TO THE WEIGHT OF THE BEARINGS TO BE MANUFACTURED, EXPOSING THESE FRAGMENTS TO THE ACTION OF A SUPPORT-ETCHING AGENT SO AS TO DESTROY THE MATERIAL OF THE SUPPORT IN THE FRAGMENTS AND THUS PRODUCING THEREIN A LONGITUDINAL HOLE, WHICH INCLUDES PROVIDING AROUND THE SUPPORT A GRADIENT OF PARTICLES OF THE PARTICULAR MATERIAL, SAID PARTICLES BEING PROGRESSIVELY DEPOSITED AND AGGLOMERATED ON THE SUPPORT, THIS RESULTING IN PROGRESSIVE EMBEDMENT OF THE SUPPORT.
