TL;DR: The proposed design of mechanical metamaterials produced by three-dimensional printing enables the efficient and quick reprogramming of their mechanical properties through the insertion of the magnets into various locations within the meetamaterial.
Abstract: The design space of mechanical metamaterials can be drastically enriched by the employment of non-mechanical interactions between unit cells. Here, the mechanical behavior of planar metamaterials consisting of rotating squares is controlled through the periodic embedment of modified elementary cells with attractive and repulsive configurations of the magnets. The proposed design of mechanical metamaterials produced by three-dimensional printing enables the efficient and quick reprogramming of their mechanical properties through the insertion of the magnets into various locations within the metamaterial. Experimental and numerical studies reveal that under equibiaxial compression various mechanical characteristics, such as buckling strain and post-buckling stiffness, can be finely tuned through the rational placement of the magnets. Moreover, this strategy is shown to be efficient in introducing bistability into the metamaterial with an initially single equilibrium state.

Abstract: This paper addresses the actuator/substrate thickness ratio that maximizes the static/dynamic response of a beam for a variety of actuator-structure integration configurations, actuator activation levels, and inertia/external loading conditions. The three different actuator-structure integration configurations considered are actuators embedded inside the substrate, actuators bonded to the surface of the substrate, and actuators discretely attached and offset from the surface of the substrate. In the category of embedded actuators, a shallow embedment just beneath the surface usually maximizes the moment/induced curvature, but for stiffer actuators, a deeper embedment results in a greater induced curvature

TL;DR: In this paper, the uplift performance of a single vertical helical anchor embedded in dry sand was investigated and an empirical model was proposed to determine the effect of the embedment ratio, shaft diameter ratio and sand density against the uplifting capacity of the anchor.

TL;DR: In this article, a series of 3D finite-element (FE) analyses were performed in both opening and closing modes of the elbow section for different initial pipe bending angles to model the mechanical behavior of sands.
Abstract: This study investigates the interaction between soil and pipeline in sand subjected to lateral ground displacements with emphasis on the peak force exerted to a bended elbow-pipe. A series of three-dimensional (3D) finite-element (FE) analyses were performed in both opening and closing modes of the elbow section for different initial pipe bending angles. To model the mechanical behavior of sands, two soil models were adopted: Mohr-Coulomb and Nor-Sand soil model. Investigations also included the effects of pipe embedment depth and soil density. Results show that the opening mode exhibits higher ultimate forces and greater localized deformations than the closing mode. Nondimensional charts that account for pipeline location, bending angle, and soil density are developed. Soil-spring pipeline analyses of an elbow-pipe were performed using modified F-δ soil-spring models based on the 3D FE results and were compared to the findings of conventional spring model analyses using the standard two-dimensional soil-...
