TL;DR: In this paper, the 2D base stability of braced excavation is evaluated using FEM with reduced shear strength and the numerical results indicate that the base stability is significantly influenced by the ratio of the depth to the width of the excavations, the thickness of the soft soil layer between the excavation base and hard stratum, the depth of the walls inserted below the excavation, and the stiffness of the wall around the excavation.

TL;DR: In this article, the results of numerical simulations of the multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) in a laterally non-homogeneous medium are presented, and the Lamb solution is used to calibrate a homogeneous model, subsequently, voids with different dimensions and embedment depths are detected.
Abstract: Detecting underground cavities beneath construction sites and urban areas is a crucial task for many engineering projects. Each year, subsidence and surface soil failure due to underground voids cause substantial damage around the world. Most of the seismic methods currently used for cavity detection can successfully locate a void but not its embedment depth. In spite of successful case histories, void detection is still a challenging problem because of the lack of a standard, quantitative void-detection technique. In addition, existing non-destructive techniques do not consider the effect of lateral inhomogeneities, i.e., cavities, in the wave propagation. Thus, the detection of underground cavities needs further study. This paper presents the results of numerical simulations of the multi-channel analysis of surface waves (MASW) in a laterally non-homogeneous medium. First, the Lamb solution is used to calibrate a homogeneous model, subsequently, voids with different dimensions and embedment depths are i...

TL;DR: Testing of the trained neural network indicates good predictions of the concrete breakout strength of cast-in and post-installed mechanical anchors in tension, and the relationships between the concrete breakthrough strength of anchors and different influencing parameters obtained were in general agreement with those of the ACI 318-02.

TL;DR: In this article, a new embedded PZT patch and its interaction with the host sandwiched beam is presented, which is based on the new concept of "average sum impedance".
Abstract: Surface bonded piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) transducers are currently the most prominent area of research in structural health monitoring using electromechanical impedance methods. This paper presents a new embedded PZT patch and its interaction with the host sandwiched beam. Durability and protection from surface finish, vandalism and the environment are important features of the embedment. The paper also demonstrates the use of thickness vibration of the PZT patch in electromechanical admittance formulations. This embedded PZT–structure interaction model is based on the new concept of 'average sum impedance'. The formulations used for this model can be conveniently employed to extract the mechanical impedance of any 'unknown' PZT patch embeddable plane structure. The mechanical impedance of the structure is obtained from the admittance signatures of the embedded PZT patch. The proposed model is experimentally verified on sandwiched beams.

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of bond thickness, embedment length and type of epoxy adhesive formulation on the adhesion of steel anchors to concrete was examined, and it was shown that the adhesive shear strength of this system is shown to pass through a maximum value at 2mm bond thickness.
