TL;DR: Braga et al. as mentioned in this paper investigated the occurrence of burnout syndrome and its relationship to some aspects of the general working conditions among the primary health care workers from a city of Sao Paulo state.
Abstract: Braga, L. C. Burnout among primary health care workers from a city of Sao Paulo state. 112p. Ph.D Thesis, Post graduation Programme of Public Health, Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu, Universidade Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho – UNESP,Botucatu, 2012 Studies show high prevalence of burnout among health professionals. Although few in number, investigations about the mental health of primary health care workers indicate the occurrence of workrelated psychological distress in this group. Considering what is known about the expansion of social and labor precariousness and its effects on workers’ mental health in the contemporary world and about the potential severity of the individual, institutional and social impacts of burnout, it is appropriate to conduct this study. It is a cross-sectional epidemiological study, which investigated the occurrence of burnout syndrome and its relationship to some aspects of the general working conditions among the primary health care workers from a city of Sao Paulo state. Data collection was performed using autoaplicable questionnaire, delivered and returned in the same day, containing 129 items, covering: sociodemographic information, opinions about work, Job Stress Scale, Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Responses were entered into two databases built with the programs Excel Office XP 2007and EPI-INFO. The results, analyzed using the STATA software 10, were submitted to univariate analysis for each one of the dimensions of burnout, identifying the explanatory variables that were associated with each dimension using the chi-square. Multivariate analysis was performed, with construction of multiple logistic regression model for each one of the outcomes, including the explanatory variables that were associated with the dependent variables with p <= 0.25 and, after adjustment, remained in the model those with p <= 0.05. The results revealed a high prevalence of burnout by Maslach & Jackson (23, 7%) and Grunfeld (52.2%) criteria. There was a positive association between (a) emotional exhaustion in moderate and high levels and the expectation of continuing employment under the same conditions of work, consider the work negative impact on life and high psychological demands at work, (b) depersonalization in moderate and high levels and treatment given by boss to information about work, high social support at work and high psychological demands at work, (c) disappointment / reduced personal accomplishment and not enjoy regular vacations. It was considered that these results point out the need for improvement of working conditions in primary health care services.

Abstract: From the prospective of Conservation of Resources theory, this paper discusses leader humor’s impact on employee proactive behavior and the mediation role of emotional exhaustion in Chinese situation. By building a structural equation model to analyze the field data collected from 175 employees, the empirical results show that leader humor exerts a significantly positive effect on employee proactive behavior and specifically, leader humor will improve employee proactive behavior by reducing employee emotional exhaustion. Chinese leaders are suggested to pay more positive attention to humor’s positive effect and supposed to take advantage of humor to increase employee proactive behaviors in future competition. TL;DR: Results revealed that burnout exists at low levels in these three Gaborone hospitals, which translates to need for emotional and physical support systems, improving individual and organizational strategies in relation to recruitment and identifying training needs in prevention of factors leading to burnout in the Intensive Care Unit environments.
Abstract: This study sought to investigate factors associated with burnout syndrome, to determine its prevalence and establish the levels of burnout amongst Intensive Care Unit nurses working in the 3 major hospitals in Gaborone, Botswana. A quantitative descriptive design was utilised. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 40 respondents/nurses who met the inclusion criteria. Levels of burnout were assessed using the English version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey. Results revealed that burnout exists at low levels in these three Gaborone hospitals. Emotional exhaustion had an average score of 2.67, depersonalization had an average of 1.53 and a variance of 1.52 and personal accomplishment had an average of 4.49, a variance of 1.01. Factors that can lead to Burnout were highly prevalent. This translates to need for emotional and physical support systems, improving individual and organizational strategies in relation to recruitment and identifying training needs in prevention of factors leading to burnout in the Intensive Care Unit environments.
