TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the relationship between workload job demand and employee well-being with mediating effects of surface acting (SA) and moderating effect of emotional intelligence (EI) in service organizations.
Abstract: The extant research on emotional labor (EL) has focused on positive and negative outcomes observed in the workplace; however, many fundamental questions remain unanswered. The research has yet to consider what factors buffer the negative outcomes of EL. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between workload job demand and employee well-being with mediating effects of surface acting (SA) and moderating effects of emotional intelligence (EI) in service organizations.,The authors used two wave data from a sample of 207 emergency medical technicians to test the hypotheses.,By integrating SA, EI and employee well-being with the conservation of resource theory, the authors found evidence of an indirect effect of workload job demand on emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction via SA. The results of moderated mediation show that the negative relationship between SA and job satisfaction was low when EI was high and the positive relationship between SA and emotional exhaustion was low when EI was high.,A major limitation of the present study is that all the participants were male and drawn from a single profession within the same organization. Another limitation is that the data were collected through self-reports.,This research has important theoretical and practical implications for service organizations wishing to buffer the harmful effects of SA on employees. This study presents key theoretical implications for the EL and well-being literatures. An important practical implication is that EI is a good resource for managing SA’s negative outcomes.,The current study contributes to the extant research by showing that workload job demands have negative effects on employee well-being via SA resulting in reduced job satisfaction and increased emotional exhaustion. Further, the negative outcomes of SA on employee well-being can be buffered through EI by taking EI as an emotional resource. High level of EI helps employees to mitigate the harmful effects of SA.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate how chronological age and work experience affect emotional labor strategies (i.e. deep acting and surface acting) through emotional intelligence (EI) and find that work experience has a negative influence on surface acting whereas it has a non-significant effect on deep acting.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate how chronological age and work experience affect emotional labor strategies (i.e. deep acting and surface acting) through emotional intelligence (EI). Design/methodology/approach – Structural equation modeling analysis provided support for the hypotheses based on a sample of 256 flight attendants working for four South Korean airlines. Findings – The results showed that chronological age has a positive effect on both surface and deep acting. The study also found that work experience has a negative influence on surface acting, whereas it has a non-significant effect on deep acting. In addition, the investigation suggests that EI mediates the relationship between work experience and deep acting. Originality/value – The current study will add to the growing body of research on emotional labor by examining the effect of chronological age and work experience on emotional labor strategies through EI.

TL;DR: The winner of the PSS 2013, Kim et al. as discussed by the authors, won 21.9% of the SPSS title with a score of 21.5%. But their performance was not as good as that of the previous winners.
【This study investigated the emotional labor factors influencing job involvement, job satisfaction and turnover intention of clinical nurses. Study subjects were 258 nurses at a hospital in B city. The data was collected from October 11, to November 30, 2013. The data was analyzed using the SPSS win 21.0 program. The mean scores were 3.47 for emotional labor, 2.94 for job involvement, 2.88 for job satisfaction, and 3.49 for turnover intention. Emotional labor was negatively correlated with job involvement and job satisfaction, but positively correlated with the turnover intention. Multiple regression analysis showed that the participant characteristics after controlling for emotional labor had 33.9% of the explanatory power on job involvement 16% on job satisfaction, and 19.8% on the turnover intention. The results indicate that the emotional labor of nurses influences their job involvement, job satisfaction and turnover intention Therefore, it is necessary to concentrate on improving the emotional labor of nurses to increase their job involvement and job satisfaction.】

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined links among organizational-level climate variables, turnover-related attitudes, and emotional labor in the field of child life and found that the need to suppress emotion and sustain outward expressions in pediatric health care facilities can be overwhelming for employees, leading to low job performance and high turnover.
Abstract: The need to suppress emotion and sustain outward expressions in pediatric health care facilities can be overwhelming for employees, leading to low job performance and high turnover. This is particularly true within the field of child life. Notwithstanding, retention and performance of health care professionals have emerged as national agenda items, and hospital administrators are routinely asked to increase performance, reduce turnover, and increase patient-care quality. Although human health care professionals are asked to support these initiatives, few evidence-based models are available to guide intervention. This correlational study (N = 241) examined links among organizational-level climate variables, turnover-related attitudes, and emotional labor in the field of child life. Hypotheses were tested through correlational and hierarchical regression analytic procedures. Contributions to practice and recommendations for future research are discussed.
