TL;DR: While the new nursing endeavours to emphasize the social context of patients, health and illness, much of the psychotherapeutic literature called in support is essentialist: the social world is treated as a hindrance to the goal of 'authenticity'.
Abstract: At the heart of the 'new nursing' is an emphasis on developing a close, holistic relationship between nurse and patient. Through this not only will healing be facilitated, and patients be encouraged to take responsibility for their own health, but the nurse will be placed firmly at the centre of the network of health professionals. Individual practitioners and the profession as a whole will achieve a clearer and more satisfying mission. This casting of the nurse as pivotal enabler parallels attempts to systematize social work theory and practice in the 1970s, and many common intellectual sources on relationship-building are used. But what are the supposed characteristics of the 'good relationship'? The paper argues that, while the new nursing endeavours to emphasize the social context of patients, health and illness, much of the psychotherapeutic literature called in support is essentialist: the social world is treated as a hindrance to the goal of 'authenticity'. Thus acquired professional knowledge and skills are devalued. Added to the potential of this for personal stress are risks for the profession itself. In circumstances of permanent financial pressure, foregrounding hard-to-measure criteria of success, like the quality of relationships, is very hazardous.

TL;DR: The literature on emotional labor and health care is examined to demonstrate the potential for emotional labor research to inform how social and medical scientists think about health care and how examining healthcare contexts has contributed to the scientific understanding of emotional labor processes.
Abstract: We examine the literature on emotional labor and health care to demonstrate the potential for emotional labor research to inform how social and medical scientists think about health care and how examining healthcare contexts has contributed to the scientific understanding of emotional labor processes. In doing so, we first review the key terms and definitions that are used within the emotion management perspective and evaluate the ways in which power differences have remained largely implicit features of research on emotional labor in healthcare settings. Finally, we explore how the increasing economic rationalization of health care may be influencing the emotional experiences of today’s healthcare professionals and the implications of this trend for future research on emotional labor and the health and well-being of care providers and their patients.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors use the US H2A guest worker program as a lens through which to analyse the gender subjectivities of Mexican transnational fathers, highlighting the ways in which the prioritization of productive over reproductive labour within the H 2A programme exploits gender-based expectations within Mexican families, reproducing rigid gender divisions of family labour.
Abstract: In this article I use the US H2A guest worker programme as a lens through which to analyse the gender subjectivities of Mexican transnational fathers. My qualitative findings highlight the ways in which the prioritization of productive over reproductive labour within the H2A programme exploits gender-based expectations within Mexican families, reproducing rigid gender divisions of family labour. Additionally, the subjectivities of guest worker fathers are influenced by cultural expectations as well as by the rurality and cyclicality of their lives. As fathers shift between the USA and Mexico, so do their gender subjectivities, symbolizing gender's fluidity. Findings complicate the oft-cited conclusion that emotional labour and sacrifice are the exclusive domain of transnational mothers.

TL;DR: This article examined worker-client relationships in hairstyling and found that self-employed stylists are highly dependent on clients, rely on deep-acting, enact favours, and are prone to emotional breaking points when they fail to realize their "congealed service".
Abstract: This article examines worker-client relationships in hairstyling. Data are drawn from interviews with 15 hourly-paid and 32 self-employed hairstylists and a self-administered survey. Relations of employment are found to be central to the deployment of emotional labour. Self-employed owner-operators are highly dependent on clients, rely on deep-acting, enact favours, and are prone to emotional breaking points when they fail to realise their ‘congealed service’. In contrast, hourly-paid stylists perform surface acting, resist unpaid favours and experience fewer breaking points. Methodologically this article demonstrates the importance of comparative employment relations analysis (CERA) for exposing the relationship between employment structures and labour process experiences.
