TL;DR: This paper investigated the attentional characteristics of ton, a nominal demonstrative in Jahai (Mon-Khmer, Malay Peninsula) previously considered to encode spatial proximity to addressee.
Abstract: The detailed semantic encoding of demonstrative systems of the world’s languages has come under increased scrutiny in recent years. One important finding is that spatial (notably distance) encoding, normally considered to lie at the heart of exophoric demonstrative semantics, may be rivalled as to its ‘basicness’ by more discourse-related forms of encoding, such as the status of the addressee’s attention in relation to the referent. This paper investigates the attentional characteristics of ton , a nominal demonstrative in Jahai (Mon-Khmer, Malay Peninsula) previously considered to encode spatial proximity to addressee. It does so in light of naturalistic interaction data from a specific object-identification task originally aimed at eliciting shapeencoding distinctions (Seifart 2003).

02 Aug 2005TL;DR: In this article, an encoder circuit, a task scheduler circuit and a decoder circuit are configured to generate first status signals in response to one or more report signals and perform video encoding tasks based on available central processing unit (CPU) cycles and memory bandwidth.
Abstract: An encoder circuit, a task scheduler circuit and a decoder circuit. The encoder circuit may be configured to (i) generate one or more first status signals in response to one or more report signals and (ii) perform video encoding tasks based on available central processing unit (CPU) cycles and memory bandwidth. The task scheduler circuit may be configured to (i) generate a control signal and the one or more report signals in response to the one or more first status signals. The decoder circuit may be configured to (i) generate one or more second status signals and (ii) perform concurrent decoding while the encoder circuit performs adaptive video encoding tasks in response to the control signal.

TL;DR: This work presents a novel approach which identifies properties of many classifiers which can be implemented in linear space and with worst-case guaranteed logarithmic time and allows the addition of more fields including range constraints without impacting space and time complexities.
Abstract: Efficient packet classification is a core concern for network services. Traditional multi-field classification approaches, in both software and ternary content-addressable memory (TCAMs), entail tradeoffs between (memory) space and (lookup) time. TCAMs cannot efficiently represent range rules, a common class of classification rules confining values of packet fields to given ranges. The exponential space growth of TCAM entries relative to the number of fields is exacerbated when multiple fields contain ranges. In this work, we present a novel approach which identifies properties of many classifiers which can be implemented in linear space and with worst-case guaranteed logarithmic time and allows the addition of more fields including range constraints without impacting space and time complexities. On real-life classifiers from Cisco Systems and additional classifiers from ClassBench (with real parameters), 90--95% of rules are thus handled, and the other 5--10% of rules can be stored in TCAM to be processed in parallel.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a method to automatically adjust the encoding parameter in response to the change in the available network bandwidth of the network connection, and send the encoded second portion of the media stream from the mobile device to the computing device via a network connection.
Abstract: A method includes encoding, at a mobile device having a camera, a first portion of a media stream captured by the camera based on an encoding parameter. The method also includes sending the encoded first portion of the media stream from the mobile device to a computing device via a network connection. The method further includes detecting a change in available network bandwidth of the network connection. The method includes automatically adjusting the encoding parameter in response to the change in the available network bandwidth. The method also includes encoding a second portion of the media stream based on the adjusted encoding parameter and sending the encoded second portion of the media stream from the mobile device to the computing device.

TL;DR: This review discusses the cultural foundation of human memory and details a model of a culturally saturated mnemonic system in which cultural elements constitute and condition various processes of remembering, focusing on memory representation, perceptual encoding, memory function, memory reconstruction, memory expression, and memory socialization.
Abstract: Human memory, as a product of the mind and brain, is inherently private and personal. Yet, arising from the interaction between the organism and its ecology in the course of phylogeny and ontogeny, human memory is also profoundly collective and cultural. In this review, I discuss the cultural foundation of human memory. I start by briefly reflecting on the conception of memory against a historical and cultural background. I then detail a model of a culturally saturated mnemonic system in which cultural elements constitute and condition various processes of remembering, focusing on memory representation, perceptual encoding, memory function, memory reconstruction, memory expression, and memory socialization. Then I discuss research on working memory, episodic memory, and autobiographical memory as examples that further demonstrate how cultural elements shape the processes and consequences of remembering and lay the foundation for human memory. I conclude by outlining some important future directions in memory research.
