TL;DR: This review evaluates the literature on hippocampal contributions to human serial‐order memory from the perspective of three cognitive theories: associative chaining theory, positional‐coding theory and retrieved‐context theory.
Abstract: Our memories form a record not only of our experiences, but also of their temporal structure. Although memory for the temporal structure of experience likely relies on multiple neural systems, numerous studies have implicated the hippocampus in the encoding and retrieval of temporal information. This review evaluates the literature on hippocampal contributions to human serial-order memory from the perspective of three cognitive theories: associative chaining theory, positional-coding theory and retrieved-context theory. Evaluating neural findings through the lens of cognitive theories enables us to draw more incisive conclusions about the relations between brain and behavior.

TL;DR: In this article, a variable-length encoding apparatus was proposed to generate a plurality of syntax elements from the image data and output an encoded stream by performing variable length encoding of the syntax elements.
Abstract: A variable-length encoding apparatus receives image data on a block basis, generates a plurality of syntax elements from the image data, and outputs an encoded stream by performing variable-length encoding of the syntax elements This apparatus includes a block memory unit group including at least two block memory units which store image data on a block basis, generates at least one syntax element by reading out transformation coefficients from the block memory units, independently variable-length-encodes each of syntax elements and outputs variable-length codewords, includes a variable-length code memory unit group including at least two variable-length code memory units which independently store the variable-length codewords as codeword streams, and generates one encoded stream from the respective codeword streams supplied from the variable-length code memory unit group

TL;DR: In this paper, an associative memory utilizes a location addressable memory and lookup table to generate from a key the address in memory storing an associated record, such that the sum of valid index values for symbols of a particular key is a unique value that is used as an address to the memory storing the record associated with that key.
Abstract: To provide fast access times with very large key fields, an associative memory utilizes a location addressable memory and lookup table to generate from a key the address in memory storing an associated record. The lookup tables, stored in memory, are constructed with the aid of arithmetic data compression methods to create a near perfect hashing of the keys. For encoding into the lookup table, keys are divided into a string of symbols. Each valid and invalid symbol is assigned an index value, such that the sum of valid index values for symbols of a particular key is a unique value that is used as an address to the memory storing the record associated with that key, and the sum of keys containing invalid index values point to a location in memory containing similar data. Utilizing the lookup tables set and relational operations maybe carried out that provide a user with a maximum number of key records resulting from a sequence of intersection, union and mask operations.

TL;DR: In this article, an image-encoding method by skip encoding, which performs intra-prediction, is described. But skip encoding does not consider the residual signal which can be generated on the basis of the difference between the encoding object signal and the prediction signal.
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for encoding and decoding an image by skip encoding. The image-encoding method by skip encoding, which performs intra-prediction, comprises: performing a filtering operation on the signal which is reconstructed prior to an encoding object signal in an encoding object image; using the filtered reconstructed signal to generate a prediction signal for the encoding object signal; setting the generated prediction signal as a reconstruction signal for the encoding object signal; and not encoding the residual signal which can be generated on the basis of the difference between the encoding object signal and the prediction signal, thereby performing skip encoding on the encoding object signal.

TL;DR: In this paper, a preferential mode determination unit was proposed to reduce the generated code amount of an intra-frame prediction mode by calculating the prediction direction difference between intraframe prediction modes of a plurality of reference blocks.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image encoding technique capable of further improving encoding efficiency by reducing a generated code amount of an intra-frame prediction mode.SOLUTION: A prediction direction difference calculation unit 604 calculates a prediction direction difference between intra-frame prediction modes of a plurality of reference blocks used for intra-frame prediction of an encoding object block. A preferential mode determination unit 603 determines a preferential prediction mode of the encoding object block on the basis of the intra-frame prediction modes of the plurality of reference blocks used for calculating the prediction direction difference and the prediction direction difference. An encoding tree selection unit 605 selects one encoding tree in which a code sequence having a code length shorter than those of other prediction modes is allocated to the preferential prediction mode according to the calculated prediction direction difference from among a plurality of encoding trees prepared according to prediction direction differences in order to encode an intra-frame prediction mode of the encoding object block. A variable-length encoding unit 606 encodes the intra-frame prediction mode of the encoding object block in accordance with the selected encoding tree.
