Abstract: The Annual Energy Outlook 2016 (AEO2016), prepared by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), presents long-term projections of energy supply, demand, and prices through 2040. The projections, focused on U.S. energy markets, are based on results from EIA's National Energy Modeling System (NEMS). NEMS enables EIA to make projections under alternative, internally consistent sets of assumptions. The analysis in AEO2016 focuses on the Reference case and 17 alternative cases. The AEO2016 report is a complete edition of the Annual Energy Outlook (AEO) and includes the following major sections: Executive summary: highlighting key results of the projections Legislation and regulations: discussing evolving legislative and regulatory issues, including a summary of recently enacted legislation and regulations as incorporated in AEO2016, such as: the EPA's final rules for the CPP [1]; the California Air Resource Board Zero Emission Vehicle program [2]; the extension of the production tax credit for wind and 30% investment tax credit for solar [3]; the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships [4]; adoption of newly added or modified federal efficiency standards for residential and commercial appliances and equipment; and modifications to existing state renewable portfolio standard or similar laws [5]. Issues in focus: containing discussions of selected energy topics, including the effects of the CPP under alternative implementation approaches; the impact of Phase 2 standards for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles; a discussion that compares the Reference case to alternative cases based on different assumptions about the future course of existing energy policies; the impact on hydrocarbon gas liquids output from changing oil prices and related industrial development; and the sensitivity of steel industry energy consumption to technology choice. Market trends: complete summary by sector of the projections for energy markets comparing the AEO2016 Reference case and the alternative cases, illustrating uncertainties associated with the Reference case projections for energy demand, supply, and prices. Abstract: The paper reviews different approaches, technologies, and strategies to manage large-scale schemes of variable renewable electricity such as solar and wind power. We consider both supply and demand side measures. In addition to presenting energy system flexibility measures, their importance to renewable electricity is discussed. The flexibility measures available range from traditional ones such as grid extension or pumped hydro storage to more advanced strategies such as demand side management and demand side linked approaches, e.g. the use of electric vehicles for storing excess electricity, but also providing grid support services. Advanced batteries may offer new solutions in the future, though the high costs associated with batteries may restrict their use to smaller scale applications. Different “P2Y”-type of strategies, where P stands for surplus renewable power and Y for the energy form or energy service to which this excess in converted to, e.g. thermal energy, hydrogen, gas or mobility are receiving much attention as potential flexibility solutions, making use of the energy system as a whole. To “functionalize” or to assess the value of the various energy system flexibility measures, these need often be put into an electricity/energy market or utility service context. Summarizing, the outlook for managing large amounts of RE power in terms of options available seems to be promising.

Abstract: This paper presents the latest comprehensive literature review of AC and DC microgrid (MG) systems in connection with distributed generation (DG) units using renewable energy sources (RESs), energy storage systems (ESS) and loads. A survey on the alternative DG units' configurations in the low voltage AC (LVAC) and DC (LVDC) distribution networks with several applications of microgrid systems in the viewpoint of the current and the future consumer equipments energy market is extensively discussed. Based on the economical, technical and environmental benefits of the renewable energy related DG units, a thorough comparison between the two types of microgrid systems is provided. The paper also investigates the feasibility, control and energy management strategies of the two microgrid systems relying on the most current research works. Finally, the generalized relay tripping currents are derived and the protection strategies in microgrid systems are addressed in detail. From this literature survey, it can be revealed that the AC and DC microgrid systems with multiconverter devices are intrinsically potential for the future energy systems to achieve reliability, efficiency and quality power supply.

Abstract: Three very different methods of accomplishing the same task-managing the operation of the transmission system in the deregulated power system operating environment-have been implemented as deregulated market structures have been created around the world. They are first, the optimal power flow (OPF) model found in various implementations in the United Kingdom, parts of the United States, and in Australia and New Zealand. Second, the point tariff, price area congestion control model used in the Nordpool market area in Norway and Sweden. Third, the US transaction-based model. All are pragmatic solutions implemented in advance of complete theoretical understanding. Each has strengths and flaws, and there are some surprising inter-relationships. Each maintains power system security but differs in its impact on the economics of the energy market. No clearly superior method has so far emerged. In the future, methods of combining decentralized market solutions with operational use of optimal power flow may provide better solutions to existing and emerging problems.
