TL;DR: In this article, the authors assess the usefulness of the repertory grid in measuring the environmental images held by two different groups of urban residents, focusing on the general image of their urban environment held by a group of female city residents.
Abstract: more important, an essential first stage in the development of a theory relating human behaviour and the environment. In a previous paper (garrison and Sarre, 1971) we put forward the view that techniques for measuring these images of the environment should be developed not on an ad hoc basis, but in the context of psychometric theory, and should relate to an established theory of mental structure and process. Personal Construct Theory and its associated repertory grid test were suggested as being potentially useful both for measuring and understanding images. The present paper assesses the usefulness of the repertory grid in measuring the environmental images held by two different groups of urban residents. In the first study, interest was focussed on the general image of their urban environment held by a group of female city residents. In the

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors lay these concerns to rest, concluding that the concept of an ecosystem itself could be a viable approach to resolving environmental problems and that analysis of ecosystems was technically feasible.
Abstract: When the United States first became active in the International Biological Program, the Environmental Management Component (primarily the Biome Programs, the Origin and Structure of Ecosystems, the Island Ecosystem Program) focused on developing a more comprehensive understanding of the origin, structure, and function of major types of natural ecosystems. This "analysis of ecosystems" was based on the premise that analyses of whole ecosystems would be necessary to assess the responses of the landscape to deleterious stresses or improved management strategies and to evaluate both direct and indirect consequences of human intervention. These ecosystem research programs began nearly 5 years ago amid some doubts in the professional community that analysis of ecosystems was technically feasible and with concerns in the broader biological scientific community that the concept of an ecosystem itself could be a viable approach to resolving environmental problems. We feel that we can now lay these concerns to rest.
