TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that environmental studies, to achieve their purpose, must become interdisciplinary, thus achieving a new level in the integration of knowledge, and describe environmental studies as a metadiscipline.
Abstract: Environmental studies do not comprise a discipline in the conventional sense. Instead, the term environmental studies identifies a focus of many disciplines upon an integrating concept, the interactions of humankind with its environment. But environmental studies are more than a multidisciplinary collage under a common rubric. The elements of environmental understanding are drawn from many disciplines, but to obtain that understanding the interrelationships among relevant disciplinary knowledge must be synthesized into coherent and comprehensive theory. Environmental studies, to achieve their purpose, must become interdisciplinary, thus achieving a new level in the integration of knowledge. In this sense environmental studies may be appropriately described as a metadiscipline. This thesis holds implications for curricula in environmental studies, primarily that academic instruction in environmental studies will fall short of its full potential if it comprises no more than multidisciplinary course offerings. How to develop a metadisciplinary curriculum that is comprehensive, coherent, focused, and flexible is a very big challenge for environmental educators. 23 references.

TL;DR: The interdisciplinary major in urban studies is ideal for students drawn to serious examination of the profound issues confronting urban/metropolitan America as mentioned in this paper, and the fact that many of the aforementioned issues are deeply embedded in the cities of the world allows students in the Urban Studies program to focus not just on domestic cities but on global cities as well.
Abstract: The interdisciplinary major in urban studies is ideal for students drawn to serious examination of the profound issues confronting urban/metropolitan America. Urban Studies seeks to prepare students — who are indeed our nation's future leaders — for the challenge of solving these issues. We help students to research and investigate such issues as the evolving patterns of metropolitanism and the necessity for central city reconstruction; the problems associated with regentrification, urban sprawl and affordable housing; the crises confronting newly emerging immigrant communities and the social cleavages of urban marginalized communities; unemployment and underemployment; law and justice; HIV/AIDS and issues of public health; the economic underdevelopment of poor communities; race and inequality; the paradox of declining welfare rolls amidst escalating poverty rates; underperforming urban schools; and the in-migration and out-migration of the city and its schools. All available social indices suggest that such domestic issues in our central cities will only increase in significance during the years ahead. The fact that many of the aforementioned issues are deeply embedded in the cities of the world allows students in the Urban Studies program to focus not just on domestic cities but on global cities as well.
