TL;DR: A qualitative case study of Island Community School 1 provides a detailed description of how one school incorporated place-based, environmentally conscious education over the course of more than a decade as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: This qualitative case study of Island Community School 1 provides a detailed description of how one school incorporated place-based, environmentally conscious education over the course of more than a decade. The study explored the conditions that supported and constrained this approach in an isolated rural community. Data came primarily from interviews with educators, students, and community members but also from participant observation. Four themes helped explain relevant dynamics: leadership by the principal, interaction with seasonal residents, teachers' varied practices, and school culture invested in student inquiry. The research illustrated an approach that prepared students in one rural community with environmental awareness and skills that might serve them wherever they choose to live as adults.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a critical characterization of how environmental education is conceptualized and introduced through the ongoing worldwide educational reform movement, highlighting the influence of the globalized and globalizing international political program for sustainable development on national educational proposals.
Abstract: This article presents and discusses some results of the authors’ analysis of international and national institutional documents related to environmental education from the 1970s to the present day. The aim of the study is to present a critical characterization of how environmental education is conceptualized and introduced through the ongoing worldwide educational reform movement. The results presented in this article highlight the influence of the globalized and globalizing international political program for sustainable development on national educational proposals. The shift from the previous institutional discourse related to environmental education towards a more explicit economicist view of the world is discussed. The purpose of this article is to stimulate discussion about some of the foundations upon which educational policies and other national initiatives related to environmental education rest, and to introduce elements that could enrich their conceptual and ethical dimensions.
