TL;DR: In this article, a study of how students read nature in different ecosystems is presented, focusing on ecology and the context is outdoors, where the authors show the importance of learning general patterns in nature and relating them to functional groups of organisms in an ecosystem.
Abstract: This paper is based on a study of how students’ read nature in different ecosystems. Its focus is on ecology and the context is outdoors. This literacy has to do with an ability to recognise organisms and relate them to material cycling and energy flow in the specific habitat that is to be read. A teaching sequence was designed in order to develop a class of secondary students’ ability to read nature in a forest ecosystem. After instruction they were taken to another ecosystem, a pond where they were asked to read the new environment. The main goal was to follow to what extent they can transfer their understanding from one ecosystem to another. The study is based on recorded interviews, field work, and classroom activities, and it shows the importance of learning general patterns in nature and relating them to functional groups of organisms in an ecosystem.

Abstract: This article discusses the development of a methodological metissage that combined Indigenous and interpretive traditions. This metissage was developed during a doctoral study conducted with Canadian environmental educators who incorporate Western and Indigenous knowledge and philosophy into their ecological identities and pedagogical praxis. It is presented as an invitation to environmental education researchers from all cultural backgrounds to acknowledge and engage with Indigenous knowledge, philosophies, and methodologies.

TL;DR: In this paper, a case study of the secondary school curriculum in New South Wales and a detailed case study from the University of Newcastle show that the main problems are an overloaded school curriculum and an inability to develop transdisciplinary learning at that university.
Abstract: The pathway for achieving sustainability outcomes in environmental education is littered with difficulty. The experience in this particular case study provides insight into the difficulties of sustainability education and the need for effective formal and informal delivery at various places in the society. Schools and universities are key components of the formal delivery of environmental education yet they do not always provide effective environmental and sustainability learning. An overview of the secondary school curriculum in New South Wales and a detailed case study from the University of Newcastle show that the main problems are an overloaded school curriculum and an inability to develop transdisciplinary learning at that university. The current formal teaching of sustainability leads to variable school outcomes. Of more concern, the university sector lags the rapidly advancing sustainability values of business, community and government. Universities may act as impediments on the pathway to sustaina...
