TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore how students' worldviews change as they experience higher education with us and conclude that sustainability attributes may be described in terms of knowledge, skills and competencies but that these are underpinned by affective attributes such as values, attitudes and dispositions; so that education for sustainable development is substantially a quest for affective change.
Abstract: This article shares and extends research-based developments at the University of Otago, New Zealand, that seek to explore how students’ worldviews change as they experience higher education with us. We emphasise that sustainability attributes may be described in terms of knowledge, skills and competencies but that these are underpinned by affective attributes such as values, attitudes and dispositions; so that ‘education for sustainable development’ is substantially a quest for affective change. We describe approaches to categorise affective outcomes and conclude that ‘education for sustainable development’ objectives comprise higher order affective outcomes (leading to behavioural change) that are challenging for higher education to address. Our own work emphasises the need for student anonymity as these higher order outcomes are assessed, evaluated, monitored, researched or otherwise measured using research instruments that focus on worldview. A longitudinal mixed-effects repeat-measures statistical mod...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined Taiwanese university students' marine environmental awareness, focusing on environmental attitudes, understanding of marine and coastal issues, and environmental behavior, and a total of 825 valid samples in a questionnaire survey were used for the analysis.
Abstract: University students are regarded as future decision-makers in society and have a high likelihood of becoming opinion-shapers in terms of the environment. Their awareness of the marine environment will therefore have a significant effect upon sustainable marine development. This study examines Taiwanese university students’ marine environmental awareness, focusing on environmental attitudes, understanding of marine and coastal issues, and environmental behavior. A total of 825 valid samples in a questionnaire survey are used for the analysis. Overall, respondents possess a highly positive attitude towards the marine environment and a moderate self-reported level of marine knowledge, but are not actively engaged in environmental protection endeavors, particularly ones involving spending personal income and taking legal or political action. Experience in marine-related activities and marine knowledge are important in fostering marine environmental awareness, particularly in regard to environmental behavior. ...

TL;DR: In this paper, an analysis of the competing and contradictory discourses of environmental education in developed and developing countries suggests that among other things, system inadequacies and malfunctions, social inequalities, the agendas of modernity and globalisation, and the hybridisation of the field continue to fissure the discursive identity and configurations of education in Latin America.
Abstract: This article develops an historical and contemporary Latin‐American perspective on the issues raised by Stevenson’s 1987 article, ‘Schooling and Environmental Education: Contradictions in Purpose and Practice’. It shows that since its inception as a pedagogical field in the 1970s, environmental education has faced many challenges and resistances in the educational systems of Latin America. An analysis of the competing and contradictory discourses of environmental education in developed and developing countries suggests that among other things, system inadequacies and malfunctions, social inequalities, the agendas of modernity and globalisation, and the hybridisation of the field (e.g. with Education for Sustainable Development, adult education, emancipatory educational and political traditions) continue to fissure the discursive identity and configurations of the field in Latin America. The article explores how this affects curricular reform and teacher professional preparation and development, in the con...
