Abstract: We present Multi-label Automatic Routing (MAR), the first compact routing protocol that attains a low path stretch (ratio of selected path length to the optimal path length) while maintaining a low routing state for mobile networks. MAR is resilient to node movements in the network. In MAR, nodes assign themselves labels based on their location in the network through a distributed algorithm. Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs) for the node to label mappings are established in some anchor nodes. Once the labels are established, the routing is automatic based on the positional labels of the nodes and DHT lookups. This eliminates flooding completely. Unlike traditional routing protocols MAR does not need destinations-based routing tables. Hence, MAR has a small routing state. With the use of multiple labels per node, the average path length is close to the shortest path and there are multiple paths between source and destination nodes. In Qualnet simulations MAR shows a path stretch close to or better than traditional table-driven and on-demand protocols like OLSR and AODV. Simulation results also show shorter end-to-end delays due to the automatic routing. The delivery ratio of MAR is comparable to these traditional protocols but with a significantly lower network overhead.

Abstract: Analytical models of deterministic routing in wormhole-routed k-ary n-cubes have widely been reported in the literature. Although many fully adaptive routing algorithms have been proposed to overcome the performance limitations of deterministic routing, there have been hardly any studies that describe analytical models for these algorithms. This paper proposes a new analytical model for obtaining latency measures in high-radix k-ary n-cubes with fully adaptive routing, based on Duato's algorithm (1998). The validity of the model is demonstrated by comparing analytical results with those obtained through simulation experiments.

Abstract: The stationary nature of nodes in a mesh network has shifted the main design goal of routing protocols from maintaining connectivity between source and destination nodes to finding high-throughput paths between them. In recent years, numerous link-quality-based routing metrics have been proposed for choosing high-throughput paths for unicast protocols. In this paper we study routing metrics for high-throughput tree or mesh construction in multicast protocols. We show that there is a fundamental difference between unicast and multicast routing in how data packets are transmitted at the link layer, and accordingly there is a difference in how the routing metrics for each of these primitives are designed. We adapt certain routing metrics for unicast for high-throughput multicast routing and propose news ones not previously used for high-throughput. We then study the performance improvement achieved by using different link-quality-based routing metrics via extensive simulation and experiments on a mesh network testbed, using ODMRP as a representative multicast protocol. Our testbed experiment results show that ODMRP enhanced with linkquality routing metrics can achieve up to 17.5% throughput improvement as compared to the original ODMRP.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider a periodic vehicle routing problem that includes, in addition to the classical constraints, the possibility of a vehicle doing more than one route per day, as long as the maximum daily operation time for the vehicle is not exceeded. In addition, some constraints relating to accessibility of the vehicles to the customers, in the sense that not every vehicle can visit every customer, must be observed. We refer to the problem we consider here as the site-dependent multi-trip periodic vehicle routing problem. An algorithm based on tabu search is presented for the problem and computational results presented on randomly generated test problems that are made publicly available. Our algorithm is also tested on a number of routing problems from the literature that constitute particular cases of the proposed problem. Specifically we consider the periodic vehicle routing problem; the site-dependent vehicle routing problem; the multi-trip vehicle routing problem; and the classical vehicle routing problem. Computational results for our tabu search algorithm on test problems taken from the literature for all of these problems are presented.

Abstract: This paper presents novel store-and-forward packet routing algorithms for Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN) with frequent postural partitioning. A prototype WBAN has been constructed for experimentally characterizing on-body topology disconnections in the presence of ultra short range radio links, unpredictable RF attenuation, and human postural mobility. On-body DTN routing protocols are then developed using a stochastic link cost formulation, capturing multi-scale topological localities in human postural movements. Performance of the proposed protocols are evaluated experimentally and via simulation, and are compared with a number of existing single-copy DTN routing protocols and an on-body packet flooding mechanism that serves as a performance benchmark with delay lower-bound. It is shown that via multi-scale modeling of the spatio-temporal locality of on-body link disconnection patterns, the proposed algorithms can provide better routing performance compared to a number of existing probabilistic, opportunistic, and utility-based DTN routing protocols in the literature.
