Abstract: The modular interference characteristics of circular-core and elliptical-core two-mode fibers are investigated in theory. The intensity distribution and figure of two-lobe mode patterns are evaluated and simulated quantitatively for different phase difference change between LP01 and LP11^(even) mode. The interference mode patterns of elliptical-core and circular-core two-mode fibers are compared, the result shows that the two-lobe interference patterns of the two-mode fibers generate energy exchange and oscillation, and the difference is that the interference mode patterns of circular-core two-mode fiber are almost elliptical, while the interference mode pattern of elliptical-core two-mode fiber is approximately circular on condition that proper selection of the ellipticity. Their two-dimensional (2D) profile determines the choice of the core shape of the information pick-up fiber.

Abstract: Optical intensity profile and optical loss in small-aperture metal waveguides were analyzed by a one-dimensional waveguide model and the beam propagation method. Guided mode profile and optical loss have a great dependence on the polarization direction of the guided lightwave. The loss for the TM0 mode is two orders of magnitude smaller than that for the TE0 mode for a slit width of less than half-wavelength. A very small spot is available at high efficiency by using a metal waveguide and an incident light with TM polarization.

Abstract: Provided is an amplification optical fibre which can output light having a desired power, and also provided are an optical fibre amplifier and resonator which use the amplification optical fibre. An amplification optical fibre (50) has a core (51) and cladding (52) that covers the core (51). The core (51) propagates light of a prescribed wavelength in at least LP01 mode, LP02 mode, and LP03 mode. In at least part of a region in the core (51) where the intensity of at least one of the LP02 mode and LP03 mode is higher than the intensity of the LP01 mode when the LP01 mode, LP02 mode, and LP03 mode are standardised in terms of power, an active element that performs induced emission of light of a prescribed wavelength is added in a concentration that is higher than that in at least part of a region where the intensity of the LP01 mode is higher than the intensity of the LP02 mode and LP03 mode.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To make small the size of unit, by providing the iris with the converter for the corrugate cone horn and the circular waveguide, so that the synthesized electric field with the TE11 mode wave and TM11 mode wave having the similar electric field distribution as EH11 mode wave can be obtained. CONSTITUTION:A single or a plurality of irises 5 are provided with the conversion section of the corrugate cone horn 4 and circular waveguide 3. That is, since the iris 5 as electric discontinuous section is provided at the waveguide having greater inner diameter possible for the propagation of higher order mode waves, the higher order mode is excited at the part. Further, TM11 mode is generated as the higher order mode and the irises are provided so that synthesized electric field of TM11 mode and the waveguide mode is only Y axis component at the contact surface of the conversion section and the horn. As a result, the electric field equivalent to the EH11 mode wave can be obtained in the horn.

Abstract: The recent interest in spatial division multiplexing as a tool to increase optical fiber communication link capacity has recently revived the interest in multi-mode optical fibers. Mode coupling within such fibers is a critical aspect of propagation, for it poses a limit to system capacity. In this paper we analyze fiber twist as a possible cause of mode coupling. It is shown that in a twisted fiber the LP modes undergo a rigid rotation proportional to the twist applied to the fiber. This rotation involves both mode power distribution and mode polarization, generalizing the well known polarization rotation (optical activity) that occurs in twisted single mode fibers. The results of this analysis may enable a more accurate modeling of propagation in randomly coupled multi- and few-mode fibers.
