TL;DR: In this paper, a robust single transverse mode slab-coupled buried-rib waveguide laser with a near-circular mode profile was demonstrated. But the authors did not consider the effect of the density of the waveguide.
Abstract: A robust, single transverse mode slab-coupled buried-rib waveguide laser by combining the concept of slab-coupled waveguide and the technique of diluted waveguide is demonstrated. The large mode size and near-circular mode profile result in high fibre coupling efficiency and improved alignment tolerance.

TL;DR: In this article, a multimode optical waveguide comprising a cladding and a core is described, where the core forms a coil spun around the longitudinal axis of the cladding, and is used to realize a mode scrambler and a mode conditioner.
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a multimode optical waveguide comprising a cladding and a core. The core of the multimode optical waveguide has a polygonal cross-section. The core forms a coil spun around the longitudinal axis of the cladding. The multimode optical waveguide may be used to realize a mode scrambler and a mode conditioner.

TL;DR: In this article, a method of making a single mode or multimode waveguide fiber which has an azimuthally and radially asymmetric core has been described, which provides additional degrees of freedom for use in forming a waveguide having particular performance characteristics.
Abstract: Disclosed is a single mode waveguide fiber and a method of making a single mode or multimode waveguide fiber which has an azimuthally and radially asymmetric core. This asymmetry provides additional degrees of freedom for use in forming a waveguide having particular performance characteristics.

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of the mode competition on the output beam quality of fiber amplifiers was investigated using the rate equations and modal decomposition method in the theoretical model and the experimental results were consistent with the theoretical analysis.
Abstract: Theoretical and experimental studies of the influence of the mode competition on the output beam quality of fiber amplifiers are presented. Rate equations and modal decomposition method are used in the theoretical model. In the experiment, the output beam-quality factor of a fiber amplifier, which is based on a Yb-doped double-clad large mode area fiber as a function of the seed beam quality and the pump power of the amplifier, is measured. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical analysis.

TL;DR: It is confirmed that frequency domain measurements make it simple to obtain mode conversion coefficients and mode dependent losses and that the dynamic equilibrium is attained after propagation over a few kilometers even in available step-index fibers.
Abstract: A simplified method for the measurement of mode conversion coefficients and mode dependent losses is proposed. The method utilizes sinusoidally modulated light instead of optical pulses and is applied to step-index multimode fibers. The results obtained by frequency domain measurement agree satisfactorily with those obtained by time domain measurement. It is confirmed that frequency domain measurements make it simple to obtain mode conversion coefficients and mode dependent losses. Experiments also show that mode dependent losses in the fibers are roughly independent of the mode order, and that the dynamic equilibrium is attained after propagation over a few kilometers even in available step-index fibers.
