Abstract: Programming is studied as an evolutionary process (starting with the problem description and ending with some computer program), which is done in a sequence of transformation steps. Nature of these steps at several levels is illustrated by typical examples. The aim is to arrive at a computer-surveyed, intuition-controlled programming support system (CIPS). Some aspects of this project, which is under way at the Technical University of Munich Informatics Institute, are discussed.
