Abstract: Between Alexandria and Jerusalem examines the dynamics of Hellenistic and Jewish cultures. It begins by looking at the changes in mentality as reflected in papyri of Roman Egypt, the birth of a qualified audience looking for teachers and preachers and requiring a new culture. This same phenomenon emerged in Rabbinic society. Rabbinic literature was different not only from the Bible, but from Alexandrian exegesis as well. However, Alexandrian exegesis paved the way for rabbinic Midrash. The book defies the understanding of culture as a combination of various petrified 'patterns,' Jewish and Hellenic. It also challenges the idea of 'separate' Jewish cultures. Rather, it endeavors to trace tremendous cultural changes. It was exactly these changes that connected one period to another, one literature to another, and thus embodied continuity and unity of culture.

Abstract: This article explores how Meister Eckhart's understanding of Christ is necessarily connected to his approach to biblical exegesis. So much so that it is argued that the two cannot be separated. The article begins by broadly outlining modern historical and literal approaches to biblical exegesis shared by both faith-based and rational accounts of Christianity. I then discuss why Eckhart's hermeneutics differ radically from these modern interpretations, before elucidating the nature and scope of his spiritual interpretation of scripture. Developing this further I demonstrate how, for Eckhart, Christ is found in and through the spiritual sense of scripture, so that the scriptures are not merely about Christ but are the source in which to find him as him. The significance and implications of this are then examined and Eckhart's interpretation of Christ established.

Abstract: The interaction between a received text and a fresh social context brings a new textual and symbolic world into being. This chapter prefers this approach to "intertextuality" over the more generally accepted one, which considers intertextuality as "concerned with the text as a thing independent of its author, while an approach oriented towards allusion is concerned with the author as well as the text and reader". Applied to biblical exegesis, this sort of intertextuality is part of the widespread naivete which believes that synchronic methods and the study of general and vague connections between texts will help one to avoid the shortcomings or unsolved problems of the diachronic approaches. The chapter presents the most explicit example of intertextuality and which is receiving growing attention in contemporary research, viz. Qoheleth iv 17- v 6. According to A.A. Abstract: The author aims to examine Augustine's understanding of the literal and figurative approaches to interpreting scripture, using a single verse, Gen 1:26, as a lens to view his changing understanding of what "literal" meant over the course of thirty years of commentaries on the book of Genesis. In his earlier commentaries, he seeks to redeem the verse from the Manichaean charge of anthropomorphism by giving it an allegorical reading. Some years later, now ordained and on the road to being made a bishop, Augustine attempts a literal reading in the Incomplete Commentary on Genesis. In the complete Literal Commentary on Genesis 3.19, he furnishes a Trinitarian reading of "Let us make humankind to our image and likeness". By the completion of his great manual on exegesis, De doctrina christiana, he displays a more complex attitude towards the interpretation of scripture: the reader has to determine whether a verse is meant literally or figuratively (or both).
