TL;DR: In this paper, an AUV and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) complementing each other on a scientific cruise in the Trondheim Fjord (Norway) is described.
Abstract: This paper describes an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) complementing each other on a scientific cruise in the Trondheim Fjord (Norway). The Norwegian University of Science and Technology Applied Underwater Robotics-Laboratory and the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment mobilized for a collaborative cruise with an ROV equipped with video camera, dynamic positioning system, still camera for photographic mosaic, underwater hyperspectral imager (UHI) and inertial measurement unit, and the AUV Hugin HUS with synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) and still camera as main instruments. A multidisciplinary approach was used to set up the operations for using ROV, AUV, SAS, and UHI to document archaeological and biological sites. The cruise was run as an integrated operation processing data online and using collected data actively in the cruise planning and replanning. The AUV presented unparalleled area coverage capacity for mapping and search, while the ROV provided detailed information from the sites. During the cruise, approximately 20 km2 were mapped with high-resolution sensors, and the data were ground-truthed using the ROV. These data provided new information and insight of both biological and archaeological sites.

Abstract: Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are self-propelled robotic platforms that can perform a predetermined mission completely unmanned. A series of manoeuvring experiments were performed using the MUN Explorer AUV during the summer of 2006 and a selection of these experimental results are presented in this paper. The purpose of these experiments was to collect a set of useful data for validating a hydrodynamic model of the dynamic performance of the vehicle. This paper aims at explaining the methods and measures adopted in accomplishing this task. Apart from providing a data set for validation of the hydrodynamic model, the data record also shows the ability of the AUV to perform extreme manoeuvres and the accuracy with which it can follow a pre-planned mission.

TL;DR: The first step in the new Coastal AUV program is the development of a 3000m depth survey AUV, described in this paper and built by International Submarine Engineering, in partnership with French partners such as Cybernetix as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: This paper presents the new Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Program launched by the French Institute for the Sustainable Exploitation of the Sea (Ifremer), for new programs related to environmental survey and monitoring. For several years Ifremer has been involved in technological development of intervention AUVs in collaboration with industrial partners. Historically, Ifremer was also a pioneer of underwater vehicles with the deep sea AUV, Epaulard in the 80’s (Michel et al. 84). The first step in the new Coastal AUV program is the development of a 3000m depth survey AUV, described in this paper and built by International Submarine Engineering, in partnership with French partners such as Cybernetix.
