TL;DR: In this article, the authors aimed at assessing the present system of waste management development to protect the water resources in terms of methods of disposal, recycling, suitability and waste management practices in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria with a view of identifying the obstacles to its efficiency and proffer alternatives towards effective utilization of waste materials for employment and wealth generation as a means of sustainable development.
Abstract: This paper is aimed at assessing the present system of waste management development to protect the water resources in terms of methods of disposal, recycling, suitability and waste management practices in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria with a view of identifying the obstacles to its efficiency and proffer alternatives towards effective utilization of waste materials for employment and wealth generation as a means of sustainable development. A sample of five out of seven states of the region is used for the assessment. A survey method using questionnaire and personal interview of the key operators in waste management, in various states and local government area was employed. It is found that in all the states, the waste management practice was to collect, transport and dump the waste material, either in a borrow pit or in a river thereby contaminating the water resources in the Niger Delta Region in Nigeria. It is also found that in the main obstacles that militated against the management and development of waste materials were absence of legal framework; lack of political will and non availability of modern technological infrastructure and expertise. It is recommended that government or through its environmental agencies or indirectly through partnership with private sector in major towns in their state establish recycling, incinerating companies/plants with modern technological expertise to take care of waste materials. It is also recommended that state governments through its state executive councils and its legislative arms should enact laws to oversee the success of these plants in relation to conversion of waste to value added product. In conclusion, when these recommendations are considered and put in practice this will lead to a more viable economy, cleaner, healthier, and aesthetic surrounding thereby providing a sustainable waste Water and Society 221

TL;DR: In this paper, the advantages and implementing methods of automobile component remanufacturing from the perspective of extended producer responsibility (EPR) have been revealed, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of automobiles from both ends, which requires manufacturers to take up the extended environmental responsibilities.
Abstract: Automobile manufacturing industry is a priority industry in promoting circular economy in China.Automobile component remanufacturing aims at reducing the environmental impact of automobiles from both ends, which requires manufacturers to take up the extended environmental responsibilities. This paper starts with the conception of component remanufacturing, then reveals the advantages and implementing methods of automobile component remanufacturing from the perspective of extended producer responsibility(abbreviated as EPR).The focus is on its implementing conditions based on two EPR features:feedback to product design and process integration. The paper finally puts forward policy suggestions for the effective promotion of automobile component remanufacturing in China.

TL;DR: In this paper, the dual nature of price and quantity systems is exploited to construct a sustainable economy, where production and waste disposal are made with a relatively small environmental burden, by extended producer responsibility.
Abstract: This paper examines how environmentally friendly production and disposal of waste are promoted by interaction between producers and disposal firms out of a market boundary. Utilizing the dual nature of price and quantity systems, I show that the concept of natural price or production price can be applied to constructing a sustainable economy, where production and waste disposal are made with a relatively small environmental burden. I demonstrate that such a sustainable economy can be created by extended producer responsibility.

TL;DR: The authors argue that the discursive power of recycling is enabled by concepts of circular economy and waste entrepreneurship, which position waste as a resource that unlocks job opportunities for people in poverty, with the effect of making it plausible to ignore the multi-scaler inequitable dynamics of waste that have been well documented by critical waste scholars.
Abstract: Recycling has come to be seen as a key strategy for tackling plastic pollution in South Africa, enabled by the rising popularity of circular economy policies globally. This paper explains how recycling operates discursively, positioning waste as an economic opportunity, with the effect of making it plausible to ignore the multi-scaler inequitable dynamics of waste that have been well documented by critical waste scholars. Quantitative and qualitative data was gathered over 13 months as part of the Valuing Plastic Project in Cape Town. Research involved establishing and evaluating a small-scale recycling scheme at Eluvukweni Church in the township of Crossroads on the outskirts of Cape Town. The methodology combined elements of participatory action research and discourse analysis to understand how ideas circulate in a way that perpetuates the status quo. This paper argues that the discursive power of recycling is enabled by concepts of circular economy and waste entrepreneurship, which position waste as a resource that unlocks job opportunities for people in poverty. As a consequence, environmental groups’ resistance to recycling as the solution to plastic pollution in South Africa continues to be constrained by the assumption that plastic waste is valuable, and that the plastic industry is able to regulate itself.
