TL;DR: A high-efficiency and CMOS-compatible silicon Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) optical modulator with Cu traveling-wave electrode and doping compensation with attractive potentiality for integration development of silicon photonics andCMOS circuits on SOI wafer in the future is demonstrated.
Abstract: We demonstrate a high-efficiency and CMOS-compatible silicon Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) optical modulator with Cu traveling-wave electrode and doping compensation. The measured electro-optic bandwidth at Vbias = -5 V is above 30 GHz when it is operated at 1550 nm. At a data rate of 50 Gbps, the dynamic extinction ratio is more than 7 dB. The phase shifter is composed of a 3 mm-long reverse-biased PN junction with modulation efficiency (Vπ·Lπ) of ~18.5 V·mm. Such a Cu-photonics technology provides an attractive potentiality for integration development of silicon photonics and CMOS circuits on SOI wafer in the future.

TL;DR: By use of the photonic crystal gratings mirrors and end-pumped microchip laser configuration, CVBs can be generated efficiently with high modal symmetry and polarization purity.
Abstract: Cylindrical vector beams were produced from laser diode end-pumped Nd:YAG ceramic microchip laser by use of two types of subwavelength multilayer gratings as the axisymmetric-polarization output couplers respectively. The grating mirrors are composed of high- and low-refractive- index (Nb(2)O(5)/SiO(2)) layers alternately while each layer is shaped into triangle and concentric corrugations. For radially polarized laser output, the beam power reached 610mW with a polarization extinction ratio (PER) of 61:1 and a slope efficiency of 68.2%; for azimuthally polarized laser output, the beam power reached 626mW with a PER of 58:1 and a slope efficiency of 47.6%. In both cases, the laser beams had near-diffraction limited quality. Small differences of beam power, PER and slope efficiency between radially and azimuthally polarized laser outputs were not critical, and could be minimized by further optimized adjustment to laser cavity and the reflectances of respective grating mirrors. The results manifested, by use of the photonic crystal gratings mirrors and end-pumped microchip laser configuration, CVBs can be generated efficiently with high modal symmetry and polarization purity.

TL;DR: In this article, a high-isolation polarization-independent optical circulator is reported, where a birefringent plate is added to each port to achieve high isolation.
Abstract: A high-isolation polarization-independent optical circulator is reported. The goal is to provide a simple structure that sharply diminishes the degradation on the isolation caused by imperfection of polarization separation in the polarizing beam splitters. The circulator structure is almost the same as that of a conventional circulator except that a birefringent plate is added to each port to achieve high isolation. The effectiveness of the added birefringent plate has been confirmed by calculation and experiment. Insertion loss and isolation of the fabricated circulator coupled with single-mode fibers have been measured to be 29.9 dB, respectively, for 1.299 mu m wavelength light. A loss ratio over 28.9 dB has been realized. >

TL;DR: In this paper, a study was made of high-speed, large-signal intensity modulation (in the frequency bandwidth of 16 GHz) with a low driving voltage of 2.0 V and a 20 dB extinction ratio.
Abstract: A study is made of high-speed, large-signal intensity modulation (in the frequency bandwidth of 16 GHz) with a low driving voltage of 2.0 V and a 20 dB extinction ratio. The modulator successfully operates at a long wavelength 1.55 μm with a low insertion loss of 6 dB. The 100 μm long device with 16 GHz bandwidth and 1.5 V 10 dB on/off ratio voltage results in a bandwidth to voltage ratio of 11 GHz/V, which is the highest yet reported for an external intensity modulator.
