TL;DR: In this article, an ultra-compact polarization beam splitter where three symmetrical dielectric channel waveguides are hybrid integrated with Au plasmonic waveguide arrays is presented.
Abstract: We present the design of an ultra-compact polarization beam splitter where three symmetrical dielectric channel waveguides are hybrid integrated with Au plasmonic waveguide arrays. Ultra-wideband operation over 50 THz with the insertion loss less than 2 dB for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic mode are predicted. The extinction ratio is better than 15 dB for both polarizations and it is realizable on a chip size as small as 0.93times4.2 mum2.

Abstract: A planar waveguide Fourier-transform spectrometer with densely arrayed Mach-Zehnder interferometers is demonstrated. Subwavelength gratings are used to produce an optical path difference without waveguide bends. The fabricated device comprises of an array of 32 Mach-Zehnder interferometers, which produce a spatial interferogram without any moving parts, yielding a spectral resolution of 50 pm and a free-spectral range of 0.78 nm. As a result of similar propagation losses in subwavelength grating waveguides and conventional strip waveguides, loss imbalance is minimized and high interferometic extinction ratio of -25 to -30 dB is obtained. Furthermore, phase and amplitude errors arising from normal fabrication variation are compensated by the spectral retrieval process using calibration measurements.

Abstract: The authors present 40 Gbit/s all-optical wavelength conversion experiments using crossgain modulation in bulk type semiconductor optical amplifiers specially designed for high speed operation. Polarisation-independent conversion is demonstrated with 9 dB extinction ratio and 30 dB (BW = 1 nm) signal-to-ASE ratio for the converted signal.

TL;DR: This Letter explores the use of Ge-rich Si0.2Ge0.8 waveguides on graded Si1-xGex substrate for the demonstration of ultra-wideband photonic integrated circuits in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) wavelength range, and paves the way for further realization of mid-IR integrated spectrometers using low-index-contrast Si 1-x Gex waveguide with high germanium concentration.
Abstract: This Letter explores the use of Ge-rich Si0.2Ge0.8 waveguides on graded Si1-xGex substrate for the demonstration of ultra-wideband photonic integrated circuits in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) wavelength range. We designed, fabricated, and characterized broadband Mach-Zehnder interferometers fully covering a range of 3 μm in the mid-IR band. The fabricated devices operate indistinctly in quasi-TE and quasi-TM polarizations, and have an extinction ratio higher than 10 dB over the entire operating wavelength range. The obtained results are in good correlation with theoretical predictions, while numerical simulations indicate that the device bandwidth can reach one octave with low additional losses. This Letter paves the way for further realization of mid-IR integrated spectrometers using low-index-contrast Si1-xGex waveguides with high germanium concentration.
