Abstract: We propose a novel cell-AGC technique for an ATM-cell based burst optical receiver on a 156 Mbps subscriber system. The cell-AGC controls transimpedance gain according to the burst cell power and enables reception of burst signals with low extinction ratio. In addition, to realize high sensitivity, we developed an amplifier that is stable under changes in ambient conditions and deviations of transistor characteristics on IC. By adopting these techniques in a CMOS preamplifier-IC, the detectable power difference between burst cells was enlarged to more than 30 dB, and the minimum sensitivity was improved to less than -39.3 dBm. These performances show our new IC fully satisfy high sensitivity specification of an ATM-PON system, and incorporating this IC in the system makes it more flexible and economical.

TL;DR: In this article, a double fabrication process (Ti indiffusion and proton exchange) is used to create a region where the extraordinary polarisation experiences a leaky propagation leading to an extinction ratio of 30 dB and excess loss of about 1 dB.
Abstract: A polariser on a Ti:LiNbO3 channel waveguide has been realised using a double fabrication process (Ti indiffusion and proton exchange). A region is created where the extraordinary polarisation experiences a leaky propagation leading to an extinction ratio of 30 dB and excess loss of about 1 dB.

Abstract: A method for increasing the all-optical modulation bandwidth of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) by use of a cross-gain-modulated (XGM) holding signal is suggested and analyzed. The bandwidth improvement is numerically demonstrated by studying wavelength conversion in an SOA-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) at 160 and 40 Gb/s. The new scheme is predicted to improve the extinction ratio and the minimum mark output power, as well as to reduce the amplitude jitter of the wavelength converted signal.

TL;DR: In this article, an ultrabroad bandwidth polarization filter based on D-shaped photonic crystal fibers with gold film is proposed to generate multiple resonances between surface plasmon polaritons and photons.
Abstract: An ultrabroad bandwidth polarization filter based on D-shaped photonic crystal fibers with gold film is proposed. The design of gold film deposited on the polished plane of the D-shaped photonic crystal fibers is benefit to generate multiple resonances between surface plasmon polaritons and photons. In our designed polarization filter, the resonant intensity in y-polarization direction is much stronger than in x-polarization direction. An ultrabroad bandwidth of exceeding 1 μm with extinction ratio better than -20 dB is obtained. The performance characteristics of the filter can be improved further by optimizing the structure parameters of the D-shaped photonic crystal fibers.
