TL;DR: The unprecedented optically-bifacial thin-film WGP with the exceptionally low reflectance below 15 % from the absorptive side and the high polarization extinction ratio (PER) of over 500 at 550 nm is acceptable for use as various display applications such as AMOLEDs and LCDs.
Abstract: We report on the concept of a thin film wire-grid polarizer (WGP) with optically dual characteristics by introducing a nano-patterned graded metal-dielectric composite-material layer. The Ti-SiO2 composite layer with a depth profile of a gradually-varied composition ratio shows an absorptive feature due to the elimination of an optical interface between a metal and a glass substrate, while the metal side of the WGP gives a reflective character. The unprecedented optically-bifacial thin-film WGP with the 144 nm-period straight-line patterns of a 100 nm-thick Ti-SiO2 composite layer and a 185 nm-thick Al layer shows the exceptionally low reflectance below 15 % from the absorptive side and the high polarization extinction ratio (PER) of over 500 at 550 nm, which is acceptable for use as various display applications such as AMOLEDs and LCDs.

TL;DR: In this article, a self-rolled-up microtube-based vertical photonic coupler was integrated on top of a ridge waveguide to achieve three-dimensional (3D) photonic integration.
Abstract: We demonstrate a self-rolled-up microtube-based vertical photonic coupler monolithically integrated on top of a ridge waveguide to achieve three-dimensional (3D) photonic integration. The fabrication process is fully compatible with standard planar silicon processing technology. Strong light coupling between the vertical coupler and the ridge waveguide was observed experimentally, which may provide an alternative route for 3D heterogeneous photonic integration. The highest extinction ratio observed in the transmission spectrum passing through the ridge waveguide was 23 dB.

TL;DR: This work fabricated 1 x 4 InGaAsP/InP MMI waveguide switch device which consists of a 1 x4 MMI splitter, 4 equally spaced single-mode waveguides with phase shifters, and a 4 x 4 MMI combiner to demonstrate dynamic switching.
Abstract: Multimode interference (MMI) waveguide switches show promise for switch in optical packet switching (OPS). In this work, we fabricated 1 × 4 InGaAsP/InP MMI waveguide switch device which consists of a 1 × 4 MMI splitter, 4 equally spaced single-mode waveguides with phase shifters, and a 4 × 4 MMI combiner. Good crosstalk and extinction ratio of −14.47 dB and 23.39 dB, respectively, are obtained. In addition, we experimentally demonstrate dynamic switching, and the rise and fall time of 1.4 ns and 1.2 ns, respectively, are obtained.

TL;DR: In this article, an error-free 10 Gbit/s transmission over 21 km fiber with an extinction ratio of 8.5 dB at room temperature (5.1 dB at 70degC) is demonstrated.
Abstract: Long wavelength monomode InGaAs/GaAs quantum dot (QD) distributed feedback (DFB) lasers with emission wavelength around 1325 nm are presented. Threshold currents below 19 mA for operating temperatures up to 70degC and output powers of 10 mW at 25degC (6 mW at 70degC) are observed. Error-free 10 Gbit/s transmission over 21 km fibre with an extinction ratio of 8.5 dB at room temperature (5.1 dB at 70degC) is demonstrated. The low threshold, low temperature sensitivity and high modulation speed were realised using complex coupled DFB lasers with ten stacks of self-organised MBE-grown QD layers and p-type modulation doping
