TL;DR: In this paper, the performance of a fully optimized optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM) based on null couplers and tilted Bragg gratings is studied in detail.
Abstract: The performance of a fully optimized optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM), based on null couplers and tilted Bragg gratings, is studied in detail. It is shown that maximization of the device performance involves three main optimization steps. First, the waveguide asymmetry (V/sub 2//V/sub 1/ ratio) should be optimized in order to minimize the extinction ratio of the unwanted mode at the null coupler waist. Second, the coupler taper shape should he optimized in order to further minimize the aforementioned extinction ratio. Third, the grating tilt angle and relative width can be also optimized to give negligible backreflections at the input port and minimize radiation losses. The results show that the proposed high-performance OADM configuration can meet stringent telecom specifications.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the switching characteristics for laser diode switches controlled by the forward injection current and found that the turn-on response time is determined mainly by the space charge capacitance and was seen typically to be ten times the carrier lifetime.
Abstract: Switching characteristics for laser diode switches controlled by the forward injection current have been studied. Pumping rate dependences for the internal gain and for the extinction ratio, defined as the ratio of output signal power to total power, were analyzed numerically and experimentally. They were in good agreement. Turn-on response time is determined mainly by the space-charge capacitance and was seen typically to be ten times the carrier lifetime. The fall time was almost equal to the carrier lifetime. A method to reduce turn-on response time by preshaping the drive pulse is also analyzed. The turn-on response time could be reduced to about 1 ns.

TL;DR: In this article, the Rochon-prism-like planar circularly polarized beam splitters based on dielectric metasurfaces by simultaneously controlling the geometric phase and the propagation phase via manipulation of the orientations and the sizes of the constituent silicon nanoblocks.
Abstract: We design and fabricate the Rochon-prism-like planar circularly polarized beam splitters based on dielectric metasurfaces by simultaneously controlling the geometric phase and the propagation phase via manipulation of the orientations and the sizes of the constituent silicon nanoblocks. The special splitters deviate only one of the circular polarizations while leave the other undeviated, acting like a Rochon prism for linearly polarized light, and their efficiencies can be as high as 66.7% with an extinction ratio of 27. The mechanism makes it possible to fabricate metasurface holograms that can only be reconstructed by either of two circular polarizations while hidden from the other. The functionality of beam splitting and polarization dependent decryption based on dielectric metasurfaces enables the potential applications in both miniaturized polarizing optical systems and information security and processing.

TL;DR: In this paper, a four-channel monolithic polarization-diversity dual-quadrature coherent receiver with balanced detection in InP was proposed and demonstrated using an interleave-chirped arrayed waveguide grating that acts simultaneously as a demultiplexer, four polarization splitters, and four 90° hybrids.
Abstract: We propose and demonstrate a novel four-channel monolithic polarization-diversity dual-quadrature coherent receiver with balanced detection in InP. It uses an interleave-chirped arrayed waveguide grating that acts simultaneously as a demultiplexer, four polarization splitters, and four 90° hybrids. There are no waveguide crossings, and the polarization extinction ratio is >;21 dB and the hybrid phase error magnitude is <; 1° without any post-fabrication adjustments. We demonstrate 4×43-Gb/s reception.

TL;DR: In this paper, a homogeneous circular polarizer based on a bilayered chiral metamaterial with two enantiomeric wheel patterns was proposed, and it was shown that the transmitted field of an arbitrarily polarized incident wave is nearly circularly polarized with a circular polarization extinction ratio of more than 30 dB at resonance.
Abstract: We propose a homogeneous circular polarizer based on a bilayered chiral metamaterial with two enantiomeric wheel patterns. The transmitted field of an arbitrarily polarized incident wave through this bilayered structure is nearly circularly polarized with a circular polarization extinction ratio of more than 30 dB at resonance. We show that the origin of this phenomenon is the excitation of spinning electric dipoles in the wheel patterns, which blocks the transmission of one-handed circularly polarized component but exert little influence on the other. We also demonstrate that the operation bandwidth can be enhanced by stacking functional layers in the propagation direction.
