Abstract: The combination of trellis coding and MPSK signaling with the addition of asymmetry to the signal set is discussed with regard to its suitabllity as a modulation/coding scheme for the fading mobile satellite channel. For MPSK, introducing nonuniformity (asymmetry) into the spacing between signal points in the constellation buys a further improvement in performance over that achievable with trellis coded symmetric MPSK, all this without increasing the average or peak power, or changing the bandwidth constraints imposed on the system. Whereas previous contributions have considered the performance of trellis coded modulation transmitted over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, the emphasis in this paper is on the performance of trellis coded MPSK in the fading environment. The results will be obtained by using a combination of analysis and simulation. It will be assumed that the effect of the fading on the phase of the received signal is fully compensated for either by tracking it with some form of phase-locked loop or with pilot tone calibration techniques. Thus, our results will only reflect the degradation due to the effect of the fading on the amplitude of the received signal. Also, we shall consider only the case where interleaving/deinterleaving is employed to further combat the fading. This allows for considerable simplification of the analysis and is of great practical interest. Finally, the impact of the availability of channel state information on average bit error probability performance is assessed.

Abstract: The authors apply a general method of bounding the event error probability of TCM (trellis-coded modulation) schemes to fading channels and use the effective length and the minimum-squared-product distance to replace the minimum-free-squared-Euclidean distance as code design parameters for Rayleigh and Rician fading channels with a substantial multipath component. They present 8-PSK (phase-shift-keying) trellis codes specifically constructed for fading channels that outperform equivalent codes designed for the AWGN (additive white Gaussian noise) channel when v>or=5. For quasiregular trellis codes there exists an efficient algorithm for evaluating event error probability, and numerical results which demonstrate the importance of the effective length as a code design parameter for fading channels with or without side information have been obtained. This is consistent with the case for binary signaling, where the Hamming distance remains the best code design parameter for fading channels. The authors show that the use of Reed-Solomon block codes with expanded signal sets becomes interesting only for large value of E/sub s//N/sub 0/, where they begin to outperform trellis codes. >

Abstract: A pilot symbol-aided Rayleigh fading compensation is investigated for M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) to achieve highly spectrally efficient land mobile communication systems. The optimum parameters for fading compensation, bit error rate (BER) performance against E/sub b//N/sub 0/ (energy per bit to the noise power spectrum density), adjacent channel interference, and cochannel interference for 16-QAM, 64-QAM, and 256-QAM, and the spectral efficiencies for these modulation schemes in Rayleigh fading environments are investigated by computer simulation. To further verify the effect of pilot symbol-aided fading compensation from a a practical point of view, a 16-QAM modem is implemented, laboratory experiments are executed, and the impact of the dynamic range limitation due to the resolution of the analog-to-digital (A/D) converters is evaluated, along with the imperfection of the analog circuits. It is demonstrated by computer simulation and laboratory experiments that the pilot symbol-aided fading compensation can sufficiently compensate for fast varying Rayleigh fading, and 16-QAM gives the highest spectral efficiency in the case of cellular systems. >
