Abstract: A device described herein may include an input port operable to receive data packets; a switching board operable to classify the data packets, determine whether the data packets should be accepted by the device, and determine whether received data packets are first data packets in a session; a management board operable to receive the data packets from the switching board that were determined by the switching board to be the first data packets in a session; and one or more processing boards operable to receive data packets from the switching board that were determined by the switching board to not be the first data packets in a session and to process the received data packets.

Abstract: Methods of capturing and compressing trace data for use in network packet traffic analysis are described. In an embodiment, when a packet is received, two records of the packet are created and stored. One record is stored in a file associated with the source address of the packet and the other record is stored in a file associated with the destination address of the packet. Various packet compression techniques are described and one example compares a newly received packet to the previous packet which has been stored in the same file and sets bits in the record which denote whether fields in the newly received packet are the same as the corresponding fields in the previous packet.

Abstract: A buffer memory device and method for fixed-length packet data. The write and read addresses of a memory are controlled by respectively independent pointer queues and these pointer queues are arranged to be distributed to the address data queue of any of the packet queues. When data are concentrated on a specific packet queue, the address data of packet queues low in use frequently are distributed so that the writable area of the specific packet queue can be expanded.

Abstract: The large growth of telecommunication traffic demand generated by multiple new applications and expected to last at least for the next decade will force telecom operators to consider offering more flexible transport services. All-optical packet switching is a powerful technique to provide this flexibility and to support in a cost-efficient way a wide range of bandwidth consuming applications. After a very brief introduction about the packet-switched network architecture studied in the framework of the ACTS KEOPS project, we describe the structure of the packet-switching node we have defined. We then move into physical and logical analysis of the network including more than 40 network sections based on 160 Gb/s throughput optical packet switching nodes could operate error free. In addition, logical simulations have proved that such networks could provide a quality of service (packet loss rate and packet transfer delay per node) compatible with a large variety of service classes. Both results validate the feasibility of the network concept and pace the way toward a flexible network based on all-optical switching techniques.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method and system for performing packet switched handover in a mobile communication network. The system comprises a mobile node, a first and a second packet switching node. The method enables the parallel sending of logical link layer frames from the first and the second packet switching node. This is achieved so that the mobile node does not reject incoming frames received from two logical link layer entities having different states. The benefits of the invention are related to improved quality of service and the avoiding of gaps in received data during handover.
