TL;DR: It is shown that, depending on the implementation, the input queueing approach studied in this paper achieves the same performance as the optimum (output) queueing alternative, without resorting to a faster packet switch fabric.
Abstract: Modeling alternatives for a fast packet switching system are analyzed. A nonblocking switch fabric that runs at the same speed as the input/output links is considered. The performance of the considered approaches are derived by theoretical analysis and computer simulations. Performance comparison between input queueing approaches with different selection policies are presented. Novel input and output queueing techniques are also proposed. In particular it is shown that, depending on the implementation, the input queueing approach studied in this paper achieves the same performance as the optimum (output) queueing alternative, without resorting to a faster packet switch fabric. >

TL;DR: In this article, a control message is sent to a destination within the packet-based network based on the presence of the first indicator and a second indicator is set in a header of a packet used to transport the control message.
Abstract: A method and apparatus in a communications system for processing control messages for a session in a packet-based network within the communications system. A first indicator is set in a control message for handling a session within the communications system through the packet-based network. The control message is sent to a destination within the packet-based network. The control message is provided priority processing within the packet-based network based on the presence of the first indicator. A second indicator is set in a header of a packet used to transport the control message, such that nodes within the packet based network, which do not examine the control message, provide priority processing of the packet in sending the packet through the packet-based network to the destination.

TL;DR: A trunk controller and processor arrangement for monitoring the error rate occurring in packets received from a high speed trunk is described in this paper. But this work assumes that each trunk controller has an error rate monitoring circuit.
Abstract: A trunk controller and processor arrangement for monitoring the error rate occurring in packets received from a high speed trunk. Within a packet switching system, packets comprising logical addresses, and voice/data information are communicated through the system by packet switching networks which are interconnected by high speed digital trunks with each of the latter being directly terminated on both ends by trunk controllers. During initial call setup of a particular call, central processors associated with each network in the desired route store the necessary logical to physical address information in the controllers which perform all logical to physical address translation on subsequent packets of the call. Each network comprises stages of switching nodes which are responsive to the physical address associated with a packet by a controller to communicate that packet to a designated subsequent node. Each trunk controller has an error rate monitoring circuit for measuring the error rate occurring in packets during transmission over the attached trunk. The error rate circuit notifies the associated processor when error rate excursions increase or decrease in excess of a multitude of processor specified percentages of error rate.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors disclosed a system and methods for steering packet traffic through an online network, which includes receiving, at a switch of a network, a packet of data, classifying, by the switch, the packet to a service function chain based on fields of a packet header of the packet, the service function chains including a set of service functions to be performed on the packet.
Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for steering packet traffic through an online network. One method includes receiving, at a switch of a network, a packet of data; classifying, by the switch, the packet to a service function chain based on fields of a packet header of the packet, the service function chain including a set of service functions to be performed on the packet; setting, by the switch, fields of the packet header to identify the service function chain classified; and transmitting, by the switch over the network, the packet to a service function device that performs a service function on the packet, the service function being in the set of service functions.

TL;DR: In this paper, a flow detection notification is received from a packet forwarding apparatus 80, link type determination means 73 determines a type of link through which a packet received by the packet forwarded by the forwarding apparatus passes, based on the identifier of the packet forwarder and the port identifier included in the new flow detection message.
Abstract: To provide a communication system capable of defining an appropriate flow path even when there are two or more types of links of packet forwarding apparatuses that form a communication network. Packet forwarding apparatus information storing means 71 stores, for each packet forwarding apparatus, an identifier of the packet forwarding apparatus, a port identifier of each port of the packet forwarding apparatus, and a type of link connected to each port of the packet forwarding apparatus. When a new flow detection notification is received from a packet forwarding apparatus 80, link type determination means 73 determines a type of link through which a packet received by the packet forwarding apparatus passes, based on the identifier of the packet forwarding apparatus and the port identifier included in the new flow detection notification, and information stored in the packet forwarding apparatus information storing means 71. Path calculation means 74 calculates a communication path for the packet based on topology information on the type of link determined.
