18 Apr 1985TL;DR: In this article, an integrated packet switching and circuit switching system comprising a number of switching modules (1000) each connected to a different plurality of user terminals (1001) is described.
Abstract: An integrated packet switching and circuit switching system comprising a number of switching modules (1000) each connected to a different plurality of user terminals (1001). Each switching module includes a time-slot interchange unit (1011) for providing circuit-switched communication channels and a control unit (1017) that controls the operation of the time-slot interchange unit. Each switching module also includes a packet switching unit (1400) used both to provide packet-switched communication channels among the user terminals connected to that switching module, and to switch control information between the user terminals (1001) and the control unit (1017) to establish circuit-switched calls and packet-switched calls.

TL;DR: Eight specific architectures for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching systems are compared: the Knockout, Sunshine, Lee's, Tandem Banyan, Shuffleout, and three variations on buffered Benes networks.
Abstract: Eight specific architectures for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching systems are compared: the Knockout, Sunshine, Lee's, Tandem Banyan, Shuffleout, and three variations on buffered Benes networks. The differences between switching systems, based on architectural choices rather than details of implementation are discussed. Several broad categories of systems based on high-level architecture choices are considered. Within each category one or more alternatives are reviewed, and an equation for the chip count for each alternative is developed. The equations are used to make plots of chip count for each network over a range of parametric values. >

16 May 1986TL;DR: In this article, a high performance packet switching network that can be used to provide voice data and video communication on a large scale is described, which makes it suitable for applications including commercial television distribution and conferencing.
Abstract: A high performance packet switching network that can be used to provide voice data and video communication on a large scale is disclosed. The packet switching network has a broadcast capability which makes it suitable for applications including commercial television distribution and conferencing. The basic switching capability of the network is provided by a switching module which is capable of producing a desired number of copies of a broadcast packet and routing the copied packets to desired destinations. A plurality of switching modules may be interconnected to form a packet switch. Interconnection circuitry is provided so that the number of interconnected switch modules may be varied with a minimum of recabling.

03 Jul 1990TL;DR: In this article, a packet network which includes a plurality of packet switching stations and in which a packet including in its header portion a VPI (Virtual Path Indentifier) for identifying one of logical paths multipliexed on a transmission line and a VCI (Virtual Connection Identifier) (VCI-VCI) for identification of logical connections multiplexed in one logical path is communicated between the switching stations, each switching station preliminarily designates a VM to be given to a packet directed to that station when a logical connection is to be set up between that
Abstract: In a packet network which includes a plurality of packet switching stations and in which a packet including in its header portion a VPI (Virtual Path Indentifier) for identifying one of logical paths multipliexed on a transmission line and a VCI (Virtual Connection Identifier) for identifying one of logical connections multiplexed on one logical path is communicated between the switching stations, each switching station preliminarily designates a VCI to be given to a packet directed to that station when a logical connection is to be set up between that station and another station. When receiving an information packet from the other station, the each station makes access to header label conversion tables on the basis of a VCI included in the received packet to read internal routing information necessary for a packet switching operation and a VCI to be given to a packet to be delivered.

08 May 1995TL;DR: In this article, the encoder is adjusted to use a long packet length and an increased channel coding efficiency during low error counts and a short packet length during high error counts, respectively.
Abstract: A method and communication system (100) provide for automatic optimization of data throughput by adjusting the encoder (108) to use a long packet length and an increased channel coding efficiency during periods of low error counts and a short packet length and an increased channel coding redundancy during periods of high error counts.
