TL;DR: In this paper, a method of determining a maximum packet size for data packets sent along a network path is proposed, where a sending computer sends a packet to a receiving computer through a sending interface.
Abstract: A method of determining a maximum packet size for data packets sent along a network path. A sending computer sends a packet to a receiving computer through a sending interface. The packet is fragmented during transfer to a receiving interface. The fragments are analyzed at the receiving interface and their size determined. The size of a fragment is compared to a pre-determined maximum packet size, and in response to the comparison, the maximum packet size is changed. The change is then reported to the sending interface and stored in a memory. Subsequent communications from the sending interface to the receiving interface are sent in packets of the size stored in the memory. Because the maximum packet size of a network path can change over time, test packets can be sent periodically to determine the maximum packet size.

TL;DR: In this paper, a transmitter computes a current value of a carrier-sense defer threshold and a transmit power level, based on an observed ratio between recent packet transmission successes, recent packet collisions, and recent packet deferrals, and an estimate of a path loss characteristic of the transmission channel.
Abstract: A method for transmission of digital information packets over a transmission channel. A transmitter computes a current value of a carrier-sense defer threshold and a transmit power level, based an observed ratios between recent packet transmission successes, recent packet collisions, recent packet deferrals, and an estimate of a path-loss characteristic of the transmission channel. The computed power level and carrier-sense defer threshold are selected to obtain a desired ratio of at least two of future packet success, future packet collisions, or future packet deferrals. The current carrier-sense defer threshold value is used to determine when a carrier signal for another transmitter's digital information packet is present on the transmission channel; transmission is deferred until the channel is determined to be clear of other packets. The packet is then transmitted at the computed power level.

TL;DR: In this article, a plurality of lower layer processing units, a table, and a processing unit are used to store flow data and a search key of a routing packet received via one of the plurality of units, when the flow data for the search key is registered on the table.
Abstract: A packet switching apparatus includes a plurality of lower layer processing units, a table, and a processing unit. Each of the plurality of lower layer processing units carries out a process for a data link layer and a physical layer to a packet. The table stores flow data which includes a routing data and a search key. The processing unit searches the flow data from the table based on a search key of a routing packet received via one of the plurality of lower layer processing units, when the flow data for the search key of the routing packet is registered on the table. Also, the processing unit selectively transfers the routing packet to one of the plurality of lower layer processing units based on the routing data of the searched flow data.

TL;DR: In this article, a power-saving packet forwarding device realizes electric power that accords to the number of lines in which communication is performed and a traffic volume inputted from the lines.
Abstract: A power-saving packet forwarding device realizing electric power that accords to the number of lines in which communication is performed and a traffic volume inputted from the lines. A header processing unit with which the packet forwarding device is equipped has a plurality of packet processing circuits for performing a packet processing. A line number decision circuit monitors the number of lines in which communication is performed and a traffic volume inputted from the line, and decides presence or absence of an operation of a packet processing circuit. Based on this decision result, a power supply and a clock of the packet processing circuit that does not need to operate are interrupted, and accordingly power saving of the packet forwarding device is realized.

TL;DR: In this article, a packet switched communications system is defined, where a plurality of switching nodes serve a pluralityof terminals through transmission links, and each of the terminals transmits a packet of data-link layer control protocol including a network-layer control protocol to an associated one of the switching nodes.
Abstract: Disclosed is a packet switched communications system wherein a plurality of switching nodes serves a plurality of terminals through transmission links. Each of the terminals transmits a packet of data-link layer control protocol including a network-layer control protocol to an associated one of the switching nodes. Each of the switching nodes is responsive to the network control protocol of the packet for routing it to one of the transmission links defined by the network layer control protocol of the packet. The switching node includes a plurality of line controllers associated respectively to the transmission links. Each line controller appends a physical address of the packet at the defined transmission link to the packet and updates its network-layer control protocol with a logical address of the packet at the defined transmission link and sends it to the line controller associated with the defined transmission link by way of a switching network.
